The Last of Us Season 2, episode 2, "Through the Valley", showed Abby successfully accomplishing her revenge. She killed Joel Miller in the concluding moments of the episode, after convincing him and Dina to take refuge in her lodge. But Joel and Dina unknowingly walk into a trap.

After entering the lodge, the former five Fireflies (now incorporated into the WLF/Washington Liberation Front) hold Joel and Dina hostage. Then Abby reveals her past connection with Joel, i.e., the surgeon Joel murdered in The Last of Us Season 1 finale was her father. This revelation makes Joel empathize with Abby, something that Craig Mazing acknowledged in The Hollywood Reporter interview:

"When Abby tells him, “I’m going to kill you, because there are some things we all agree are just f*cking wrong,” there is this slight moment of agreement. Joel knows what he did is capital-W Wrong. But he also had no choice [but to kill the Fireflies last season], as far as he saw it. He did what he needed to do. So we already know that he has some guilt about it from the therapy scene in episode one. It’s also one of the reasons we made a change from the game to have Joel in that room with Dina, as opposed to Tommy (Gabriel Luna), who’s a big, tough guy. Abby is basically saying, “Make one mistake and we’re going to kill her.” And if there’s one thing we know about Joel, it’s that he’s sort of the ultimate dad. We know he cares very much about Dina and that he would never let her suffer in any way, shape or form, to defend himself."

While Dina was knocked unconscious by the former Fireflies during the moment of Joel's murder, she did notice the WLF patch carried by the assailants. This sets up the way Ellie will get her revenge on Abby and her crew in the upcoming The Last of Us episode and even the next season, as the showmakers are splitting the game in two.

Does Ellie get her revenge in The Last of Us game?

Ellie and Abby fight twice in The Last of Us Part II. In the first fight, Abby comes out on top, but in the second one in the climax, Ellie manages to overpower Abby. But Ellie doesn't deliver the killing blow, breaking the cycle of violence. But this doesn't mean that Ellie's hands are clean.

Ellie had murdered Owen, Abby's ex-boyfriend, and Mel, one of Abby's crew members, who was pregnant at the time of her death. Niel Druckmann tells a story of the cyclical nature of violence through The Last of Us. This is why, in a recent The Hollywood Reporter interview, one of The Last of Us co-showrunners, Craig Mazin, said this:

“The point of this story is that the entire concept of protagonist is flawed. The entire concept of villain is flawed. Our way of processing the world through heroes and villains is a mistake. It ends up creating these barriers between people that shouldn’t be there.”

The Last of Us Season 2, episode 3 will be accessible through streaming on April 27, 2025.
