Daredevil: Born Again episode 3 ended on a rather shocking and heart-breaking note as the character of Hector Ayala meets his end at the hands of an unknown assailant. This end is shocking because the actor playing the character is not with us anymore. As the assailant walks wearing a T-shirt with the Punisher skull towards the camera, the scene cuts to the credits that play the sound of the coqui frog.
The inclusion of the coqui sound is an homage to both the character's favorite sound and the actor's performance in that particular scene in which he tells Matt about the frog's sound earlier in the episode. Kamar de los Reyes' Hector describes the sound of coqui as "magical" and says this:
"The coqui, it mates for life. So, every sunset thousands of these frogs start calling out to their one and only love."
Playing the sound after Hector's death honors his love for the coqui, which he associates with home.
Daredevil: Born Again's closing credits explained
As stated earlier, in the first half of the third episode of Daredevil: Born Again, Hector expresses affection for his home and the sound of coqui. Playing the pleasant sound of the frog serves as a heart-touching farewell to the character and even the actor. It must be noted that the actor portraying Hector Ayala/White Tiger, Kamar de los Reyes, passed away from cancer on December 24, 2023.
Thus, "The Hollow of His Hand", the third episode of Daredevil: Born Again is a posthumous release. Several people who have worked with Kamar de los Reyes had nothing but nice things to say about him. On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Michael Cuesta, the director of the third episode, appeared in an interview on Brandon Davis' Phase Hero: A Film & TV Podcast. Michael Cuesta said this:
"We finished it way before [Kamar de los Reyes passed away]. Sana [Amanat] from Marvel is the one who alerted me. It had to be almost a year after. I mean, he was definitely not well when we were filming, and, at times, we had to shoot around it, but when I heard it was devastating. But the guy worked really hard. He wanted to be — he worked through a lot of pain. At the time, we didn't know what was happening. I would check with him every half hour, and he was like, 'I'm good, stop bothering Michael. I'm fine. I want to do it.' Which, you know, in retrospect, I really understand him wanting to do that."
How may Hector Ayala's death factor into Daredevil: Born Again?
Three episodes in, and the only time we see The Man Without Fear in Daredevil: Born Again is in the opening moments of the first episode, when Foggy Nelson dies. The death of his best friend pushes Matt to the edge and he tries to murder Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye by throwing him off the roof for fatally shooting Foggy. Seeing that he crossed a line by trying to kill his opponent, Matt retires as Daredevil.
However, learning that the client he successfully defended but outed as a vigilante may probably prompt Matt to suit as The Devil of Hell's Kitchen again. It must be noted that Matt outed Hector as The White Tiger in the court. Had it not been the case, Hector would've been declared guilty and imprisoned. Outing The White Tiger's secret identity painted a target on Hector's back.
As stated earlier, Hector's assailant wore a Punisher skull, thus, Matt may suit up to bring these people to justice and may seek Jon Bernthal's Frank Castles's help in stopping these people.
"In Marvel Television’s 'Daredevil: Born Again', Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course."
