X-Men ‘97 was a breath of fresh air for adaptations featuring the mutants. Announced in November 2021, the revival of the beloved and iconic 90s animated series won both critical and popular acclaim. The first season of the revival streamed on Disney+ between March 20, 2024, and May 15, 2024. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, which will be addressed in the second season.
Fans have been waiting for an update on the second season for a while since the finale aired. So, this month has been great for fans waiting for updates on the animated series featuring the mutants. The Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, confirmed a 2026 release in a March 1, 2025 Collider interview with Steve Weintraub saying:
Season 2 of X-Men ‘97 is going to be in ‘26. We're working on it now. It's exciting. That world of the ‘90s is just… Honestly, Steve, I can't believe they let me make it. I grew up at Marvel, as you know. I've clocked a lot of time here, and I feel like I used a lot of currency to revive this thing that I loved watching after school. So, the fact that we get to play in that universe with those actors is honestly why I went into this business in the first place.
After him, Lenore Zann, the Canadian politician and actress who has been voicing Rogue since X-Men: The Animated Series (1992 to 1997), provided important updates on Seasons 2 and 3 of the revival. She revealed that the voice work for season 2 is complete and confirmed a 2026 release date for it. She also revealed that she will begin recording for the third season next week.
Explaining the recent X-Men ‘97 updates from Brad Winderbaum and Lenore Zann:
As stated earlier, fans of Marvel's mutants can't get enough of the news they've been getting about the animated series. Firstly, there was the confirmation given by Brad Winderbaum regarding the year in which the second season of X-Men ‘97 will be accessible on Disney+. While he did confirm the year as 2026, Winderbaum didn't reveal the date or even a release window.
If Marvel were to follow the first season's strategy, season 2 would begin streaming somewhere in March 2026. However, we need to wait for an official confirmation regarding the release window and date. He was not the only one to offer updates on the show, though. Actress Lenore Zann also offered fans new updates at an Indiana Comic Convention this week.
Zann appeared alongside fellow cast members Chris Potter (Cable in X-Men '97 and Gambit in the original animated series) and Alyson Court (Jubilee). In that panel, Zann revealed not just one but three things to the fans. The first update was regarding the status of season 2, for which she said:
"We've finished recording Season 2, and that will be coming out in 2026."
The second news is the confirmation of season 3. Zann revealed the time when she will begin recording her voice for it:
"I'm about to start to go into the studio next week to start on season three, so I've got lots to look forward to."
Lastly, the voice actress for Rogue revealed that she was happy with the new showrunner Matthew Chauncey and his writing team's work on the series. Appreciating Chauncey, Zann said:
"I met Matt Chauncey, who's our new head writer and showrunner, and I've met a lot of the writers, well, all of them, actually. It's great. And it's interesting because I wrote a memoir called A Rogue's Tale, which just came out in the fall, and he contacted me and said, 'I'd really like to give your book to each of the writers.' So he gave it as Christmas presents to the writers. It was really sweet."
These updates have fans pumped for the upcoming season.
