Almost three years after its first premiere, Netflix has officially confirmed that Heartstopper won't be renewed for a fourth season. Instead, Heartstopper will round up its narrative with a feature film on Netflix.
As per the statement from the streaming platform giant, the Heartstopper feature film will take things up right where the third season of the show had left them, marking an important milestone in the relationship between the leading characters of Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, played by Kit Connor and Joe Locke, respectively. Here's everything that we know.
Is there a release date for the Heartstopper feature film?
As of now, Netflix is yet to come out with a potential release date for the Heartstopper feature film. The streaming platform has, however, revealed that filming is scheduled to commence in the summer of this year.
The upcoming film has been written by creator and executive producer Alice Oseman, who is also the author of the graphic novels from which the series was adapted in the first place. Oseman recently stated:
"I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story, I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
What is the plot of the upcoming movie?
The feature film will continue the story of Nick and Charlie's relationship and will also present several changes that are looming on the horizon of their affection for each other. The official synopsis for the film reads:
"Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on."
The film would be adapted from the sixth and final graphic novel in the series. This time, however, Joe Locke and Kit Connor will be serving as executive producers apart from starring in the leading roles. Wash Westmoreland of Still Alice fame is set to direct the film.
Alice Oseman opens up about Heartstopper and her creative journey
Speaking in a Guardian interview last year, Oseman opened up about her own creative process that led to the publication of the popular graphic novel series. When asked about making a transition from graphic novels to the world of streaming shows, Oseman explained:
"It’s actually more similar than you would imagine, perhaps because the comic is such a visual medium. So much about making them is about choosing what frames and what angles you’re showing the characters from, like the thought process that goes into directing something for the screen."
She was then asked about her work on the final volume of the graphic novel, to which she replied:
"I’m only 50 pages in, but I know what’s going to happen, what all the dialogue is going to be, and now I’m just sitting down and drawing it, which is my favourite bit."
All the episodes of the show are available exclusively on Netflix.
