In an interview with Conan O'Brien in 2014, Michael C. Hall, the actor behind Dexter Morgan, shared a humorous take on how he sees his character of Dexter dying in the show. He emphasized that it should be comedic:
"If he’s gonna die, he should die funny... like he represents himself in court and he gets himself off and he’s walking down the courthouse steps and he gets hit by a bus."
The Dexter franchise is preparing to launch a continuation of Dexter's story in Dexter: Resurrection, slated for release in summer 2025. Hall is set to reprise his role, continuing the exploration of Dexter's complex character. Dexter talked a lot about his character further in the interview. Read on to know more.
Here is what Michael C. Hall revealed about Dexter in the interview
Hall further suggested to do 12 finales of the 12 episodes, each time exploring unique possibilities about how Dexter should die.
"I've actually thought it would be interesting to do a final season for the 12 finales (of all the episodes). "
The other ways they talked about were quicksand or an exploding hot air balloon. Despite the dark nature of the show, Hall acknowledged its occasional moments of humour, particularly through Dexter's inner monologue.
Talking about the possibilities of cameo in the show, he says that cameos are possible for characters who are Dexter's victims. He also admits that Dexter is not a stand-up comic kind of funny. While he is ironic, a sense of humour is doubtful.
The conclusion of the actual series finale in 2013 took a much darker turn and also left many fans unsatisfied. Dexter faked his death and isolated himself in a remote cabin.
In another interview with The Daily Beast, Hall himself admitted to understanding the disappointment of the fans with the ending. He believes that people were expecting him to die, but his exile in prison is quite "fitting" for Hall in Dexter.
"The way that show ended gave no sense of closure for people, and a lot of questions were left unanswered. Maybe some people... wanted a happy ending for him, either a happy ending or a more definitive sense of closure. They wanted him to die or something, but I think the fact that he's sort of exiled in a prison of his own making is - for my money - pretty fitting," he said.
During the interview, he expressed openness to revisiting Dexter under the right circumstances. Therefore, the 2025 Dexter spin-off is indeed the awaited one, which will continue Dexter's story.
