HBO’s acclaimed historical TV show, The Gilded Age, will return with a new season sometime this year. The show will explore the era of divorce in 19th-century American society.

Created by Academy Award winner Julian Fellowes, also known for Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age tells the story of tensions and frictions in American society, mainly the clashes between the new-money and old-money families.

Francesca Orsi, HBO's programming executive, recently spoke to Deadline. She stated,

"I think, broadly, it’s an interesting way in which we’ve explored that era of how divorce came to the forefront in United States relationships."

In the previous season, the Russells did show some light friction in their marriage, but it was resolved before the season ended. Season 3 might take a deeper view of how these conflicts might sometimes lead to a separation.

The Gilded Age Season 3 will reportedly focus on the divorce era.

As previously mentioned, Season 3 of The Gilded Age will be centered around arranged marriages and divorce in American society of the late 19th century.

To add to her earlier comment, Orsi said:

"I think that there’s a conversation to be had about arranged marriages, and if it doesn’t necessarily work, what divorce looks like in that time, and what that bodes for society. And then whether you’re accepted in society or not, based on a divorce."

Other than Orsi, actress Carrie Coon, who played the role of Bertha Russell, revealed in an interview with People Magazine that the new season will be as exciting as the previous one. She added:

"I was really shocked by a couple of the twists we have coming. So that was thrilling. They keep surprising me. I haven't even seen all the scripts yet, so I am eager to be surprised."

Actress Louisa Jacobson, who portrays the role of Marian Brook in The Gilded Age also teased about the plot twists in the upcoming season during an interview with People Magazine and said:

"There’s a lot of plot twists. It’s gonna keep you on your toes."

While Orsi shared the main theme that season 3 will explore, it wasn’t revealed which characters might go through the straining process of divorce and take the brunt of society at that time.

However, nothing has been confirmed about the storyline of Season 3.

Other than the stellar ensemble cast of the beloved historical drama, there are several new faces, such as Bill Camp, Leslie Uggams, Merritt Wever, LisaGay Hamilton, Paul Alexander Nolan, Andrea Martin, Jessica Frances Dukes, and Hattie Morahan.

The Gilded Age has scored 8/10 on IMDb and has a rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
