Has HBO found the golden trio for the Harry Potter series? Speculations explored

The news of HBO adapting the J.K. Rowling novel series into a decade-long TV show has piqued interest among fans of the wizarding world. Fans are anticipating updates on who will be the new Harry Potter.

Social media is abuzz with rumors that HBO has already cast the young actors who will play the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione, and Ron Weasley. Since the series will start filming in the summer of this year in Leavesden, and pre-production will soon begin, these rumors have been on the rise.

However, HBO has not shared any official statement about finalising the three lead roles.

An open casting call for the three leads had been shared by Warner Bros. Discovery in September 2024, which stated that the actors should be between the ages of 9 and 11 in April 2025. Furthermore, the actors must be from the UK and Ireland, aligning with the characters’ nationalities from the Harry Potter books.

The Harry Potter series will cover more of the book than the movies as it will delve deeper into the novels, with every season following a single book from the series. It will cover subplots and storylines that the movies couldn’t cover, such as the Marauders’ explanation about house elves and S.P.E.W, and several other important details.

Other than speculations, John Lithgow is the only one who has been confirmed to be a part of the new adaptation of the Harry Potter series. In a recent interview with Variety, the actor talked about how playing Dumbledore is one of the biggest decisions in his life. He said:

"I don’t know the Harry Potter canon by heart as 98% of the world’s population seems to. It was a huge decision because it involves the next several years of my life. And I’m not young. I mean, this is the last big role I’ll probably play."

Other than Lithgow, Janet McTeer and Paapa Essiedu are reported to be in negotiations to play Professor McGonagall and Severus Snape, respectively.

The Harry Potter series will be streaming on HBO and Max.
