HBO’s Harry Potter series is scheduled for release in 2026. It has begun its pre-production. The British actor Paapa Essiedu has been offered the role of Professor Severus Snape.
It is unclear if negotiations have begun if there is a deal between Essiedu and HBO in place or if he has accepted to play the role. It is also reported that the Oscar-winning actor, Mark Rylance is considered to play Albus Dumbledore.
According to HBO, the series will be a faithful adaptation of the Harry Potter books and will feature an entirely new and diverse cast to revamp the series for a newer generation of fans.
Earlier this year in June, it was confirmed that Francesca Gardiner will be the showrunner and the executive producer on the show. While Mark Mylod will serve as the director on a few episodes.
The synopsis of the upcoming series reads:
“A faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling. The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years. Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”
Who has the role of Severus Snape in the HBO Harry Potter series been offered to?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the role of Severus Snape has been offered to British actor, Paapa Esseidu by HBO. Essiedu began his career as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing the leading man in their productions of King Lear and Hamlet.
He has also previously played roles in Murder on the Orient Express and Men, Black Mirror, The Lazarus Project, and Gangs of London. If Paapa Essiedu comes on board the series as Severus Snape, it would mark his return to HBO.
The actor has previously worked in the series I May Destroy You. In response to the reports of Paapa Essiedu’s name being considered for the series, HBO has released the following statement,
“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
Exploring the character of Professor Snape in the Harry Potter
Professor Snape is one of the main antagonists in the first season of the show, which will be based on J.K. Rowling‘s debut novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (1997). He shares a complex relationship with Harry Potter. In the past, he was bullied by Harry’s father, James Potter. He also has unrequited feelings for his mother, Lily Potter.
As Harry begins his first year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he encounters Snape as the potions master and the head of the Slytherin house in the school. Throughout the books they clash, and Snape turns out to be quite a thorn in Harry’s side.
In the Harry Potter film series, Severus Snape was played by the late actor Alan Rickman.
