Grey's Anatomy has undoudtedly gone on to become a cultural phenomenon ever since the medical drama first premiered back in 2005. Not only has Grey's Anatomy cemented it's position as the longest-running scripted show on ABC as well as the longest running medical drama on prime-time television, it has also done this for twenty one seasons.
As per a report by Deadline, it has now been confirmed that Grey's Anatomy will be returning for its twenty-second season on ABC. Although there isn't any official confirmation about a potential release date, it is being speculated that the upcoming season will comprise eighteen episodes, similar to the twenty-first season of the show.
Most of the major cast members are expected to return for the upcoming season, including the lead character of Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo.
Ellen Pompeo speaks about Grey's Anatomy and her financial stability
Ellen Pompeo's success on Grey's Anatomy has enabled her to become the highest-paid actress in her league. As the show continues to rake in huge amounts of revenue for the network, Pompeo's fees have consistently been top dollar, and this has allowed her to have a unique degree of financial security by playing Meredity Grey. In an interview with People Magazine, Pompeo had commented:
"Financial security is not something that every actress is afforded, So I’m very grateful for that."
Pompeo is reportedly paid a whopping $20 million a year for her contributions to the show. She had also stated:
"I’ve chosen to financially empower myself so that I never have to be ducking predators and chasing trophies. It’s not for everyone. You have to be more interested in business than you are in acting.”
Despite being such a successful actress, she had once expressed that she is just a hard worker:
"Grey’s is huge and everything, but in the scope of actors I’m sort of like a blue-collar worker. I’m not the cool kid in high school. I’m not the popular kid, I’m just kind of like a worker bee."
She further added:
"I think sometimes your journey is the journey you’re meant to have, and I think my journey is the journey I’ve been meant to have. I wasn’t meant to do anything else. And I feel quite peaceful about where I’ve been and what I’ve done and really excited about what lies ahead.”
Ellen Pompeo on her past exit from the show
Despite being a towering presence throughout the nineteen seasons of Grey's Anatomy, Pompeo took a step back from the show's twentieth season. While speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, Pompeo revealed that she decided to take a break from the show as she felt it was necessary for her sanity:
"I gotta mix it up a little bit, I'm 53, my brain is like scrambled eggs. I gotta do something new. You can't do The New York Times crossword puzzle every single day."
