Gabriel Macht recently opened up about his experience playing Harvey Specter in Suits and the challenges he faced early on. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, he revealed that before Suits, he hadn’t worked on a TV series for a decade.
Macht admitted that adjusting to the storytelling style of Suits was a learning process for him. Unlike movies, where character development happens quickly, TV series require a slower, more gradual evolution.
"Before I did Suits, I hadn’t done a series in a decade, and I only did 13 episodes of that show before going off to do movies. With a series, it’s slow turns and slow deepening of a character, and when I first approached it, I started to have Harvey change within the first season. I had to pull the brakes, because if you do it that quickly then you have nowhere to go after the first two seasons,"
Macht explained.
At first, he tried to develop Harvey’s character too fast, which would have left him with nowhere to grow in later seasons. But once he adjusted to the slow-burn nature of the series, he embraced the challenge and became excited about the depth he could bring to Harvey over time.
Returning as Harvey Specter in Suits LA
Macht is all ready to start his journey as Harvey Specter, which he was skeptical about since he's coming back on screen after a long time. He shared that returning to the Suits universe was both exciting and nostalgic.
"There’s some scenes where you see me on the baseball field, and we shot at a park that I used to practice [at] in high school. We’re eating at the Factor’s Deli down the street from where I grew up — that’s one of the locations — so that was cool,"
Macht said.
He also reconnected with an old friend from high school who was working as a camera operator on the set, making the experience even more special.
While Macht was thrilled to step back into Harvey’s shoes, he sees his return as more of a passing of the baton to the new cast, including Stephen Amell.
"I definitely see this as a passing of the baton to Stephen [Amell] and the rest of the cast and crew in this Suits LA universe. I was excited to come back and revisit the world of Suits, and I had a great time with the ensemble of players that are working on that show… and now, moving forward, I’m really focused on my work with Bear Fight and the direction we are taking the brand. Suits LA is in great hands, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the new team shapes the series,"
Macht shared.
Though he may not be a regular in Suits LA, his return as Harvey Specter is sure to excite longtime fans of the show.
