Gwendoline Christie’s Severance Season 2 role hints at deeper mysteries within Lumon’s O&D department

After a long wait of about three years, Apple TV's Severance Season 2 is back, and fans will further dwell into the mysterious Lumon Industries.

The story follows Lumon Industries, who is conducting an experiment on their employees, where they have implanted a chip inside them that segregates their work consciousness (innie) to their home consciousness (outie) to achieve a perfect work-life balance and to protect their highly classified work.

The employees do not remember anything about the outside world when they log in at work and vice versa. Severance Season 1 saw Adam Scott as Mark Scout, and Britt Lower as Helly, realizing the controversial nature of their company, and Season 2 saw their rebellion coming into full focus.

Through a recently released teaser, Season 2 introduced Gwendoline Christie, who will join the show's cast. While details about her character have not yet been disclosed, it is speculated that she might play a higher-up at Lumon Industries in the O&D department (Optics & Design).

Gwendoline Christie’s Severance Season 2 role might uncover the mysterious O&D department

Severance Season 2 revealed a new cast addition in Gwendoline Christie through one of the teasers. She might be related to the mysterious O&D department on the severed floor of Lumon Industries.

While Christie's appearance is brief in the teaser, her character can be linked to the O&D department from her blue uniform and green badge, which is the standard uniform for all those working in the department, as seen in Season 1.

Burt G. was heading the O&D department in Season 1 and had the same uniform as Christie (except for the scarf). After his retirement in Season 1, it could be that Christie's character is brought in as the new head of the O&D department.

It is established that many departments are at play on the Lumon's severed floor, which were not shown in their full capacity in Season 1. Christie's character might act as a doorway to unlock the mysterious going on in the department.

What do we know about the O&D department from Severance Season 1?

Much like the Macrodata Refinement department in the show, O&D is another mysterious department on the severed floor, whose true nature was not revealed in Season 1. While Burt G. and Felicia were thought to be the only employees in the department, it was later revealed that the department has at least eight employees, a bigger room than the MDR, and mysterious machines.

From what little is known about their work, the O&D is in charge of taking care of beautiful but unusual paintings that depict the history of Lumon, especially events in the life of Kier Eagan, the founder of Lumon.

In the episode titled, 'The Grim Barbarity of Optics and Design,' one of the notable paintings is shown in Season 1, which captures the day O&D allegedly attacked the MDR.

While Severance Season 2 might solve some of the mysteries around this department, Christie's character may be at the center of it all.
