The much-awaited The Last of Us Season 2 has premiered on HBO and Max, and fans have been thrilled to dive back into action and intense drama. Following the first chapter, Season 2 is also set in a grim, post-apocalyptic world with the events occurring after five years.

The Last of Us Season 2 brings back fan-favorite Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, and his co-star, Bella Ramsey, as Ellie. The two have now found a place in a community in Jackson, Wyoming, where Ellie is undergoing training to become a tough and strong survivor.

Since the show is based on the renowned video game, it has brought new characters like Abby, Jesse, Dina, and more. Interestingly, the Season 2 premiere also features a cameo by Gustavo Santaolalla, the man behind the haunting and emotional music for The Last of Us games and the HBO series.

The cameo comes right when the first episode is about to end. Ellie and Dina are at a New Year's Eve party of their survivor community, and Santaolalla is one of the band members playing an instrument.

It’s a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, but fans who know what he looks like spotted him immediately. How? Because a similar cameo is in the video game's part two as well, where Santaolalla is seen playing a banjo.

Keep reading to learn the meaning behind this cameo.

Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla appeared in the The Last of Us Season 2 premiere

The Last of Us Season 2 premiere "Future Days" has a sweet moment when Ellie and Dina are dancing and Dina finally makes a move. However, during this scene, many fans might have missed Gustavo Santaolalla's cameo as he appears as one of the band members at the celebration.

However, this isn't the first time the composer is showing up in a cameo, as he was first seen in the video game. So this TV cameo is a sweet little callback to that. Even though it’s just a short scene, it’s full of meaning. It’s a quiet tribute to everything Santaolalla has done to shape the emotional tone of The Last of Us.

Without his music, the games and shows wouldn’t feel the same. The creators of the HBO series wanted to honor him not with big words, but with a moment that fans could appreciate. It’s also a nice way to connect the show and the games, keeping that familiar feeling across both.

The man behind the camera, The Last of Us co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin, recently opened up about the special moment in the Season 2 premiere. In an interview with Radio Times, Mazin shared the real story of how this beloved figure from the game’s world ended up playing live music on screen in the show.

According to Mazin, the idea actually started quite casually. Santaolalla had told him that he wanted to visit the set, just to see how everything was coming together. But Mazin immediately came up with the idea of putting the composer in the show.

The showrunner explained:

"And I just thought, well, this sequence, I mean, there's a band, it makes absolute sense to have him there. And, oh, he's the greatest. And the band, their real name is Crooked Still. It was just so fun watching, they're all fantastic musicians."

Craig Mazin continued:

"He was so happy. And I said, 'Gustavo, this is going to be the two longest days of your life. We're gonna do it over and over and over.' Loved every minute of it. Never complained. Oh, it was a dream."

The showrunner knew that the cameo by Gustavo Santaolalla would prove to be a great idea. It ties the show back to the games and gives longtime fans a meaningful little Easter egg. It's one of those moments that’s small on the surface but full of heart.
