Reacher Season 3 Episode 4 was an emotional one. We saw a side of Reacher that we rarely get to see. Our giant drifter isn't one to form personal bonds easily, but this episode showed us a Reacher who quickly developed a friendship rather than a mentor-mentee relationship with Sergeant First Class Dominique Kohl.
Since the beginning of the season, we have seen agent Duffy asking Reacher why he considers Quinn to be the worst person he has ever encountered. However, Reacher keeps avoiding the question. It is evident that he has a personal enmity with Quinn, but we are left wondering why.
This is the episode where we finally get the answer. Shown mostly in flashbacks, the episode takes us to a past where Reacher meets a bright officer named Dominique Kohl as they team up on a case involving Quinn.
The story is heartbreaking and infuriating as we learn what Quinn did to earn his rightful place on Reacher's blacklist. Agent Duffy is deeply moved too. Upon hearing the story, she reveals a truth of her own, and that's when Reacher says,
"Guess we have that in common"
Let's dive into the details.
Reacher Season 3: Dominique Kohl and Reacher's bond
This episode takes us back a few years to when Reacher was investigating a case involving Quinn. He is partnered with the extremely competent and intelligent Sergeant First Class Dominique Kohl.
At first, Reacher is hesitant. But when Kohl proves her sharp reasoning skills within minutes of stepping into his office, he asks for a chair for her—something he usually avoids since he prefers no one hanging out in his office.
During a stakeout, they sit in the car and discuss their personal lives. This moment shows that Reacher was interested in knowing her, which, again, is quite rare. He is also impressed by how quickly she could read people, even within minutes of meeting them.
In the interrogation room, we see Reacher standing on the other side of the glass, smiling as he watches Kohl in action. It’s almost like he’s silently cheering her on.
And then, when they finally have everything in place to arrest Quinn, Reacher wants Kohl to be the one to do it because he feels she’s truly earned it. It’s clear he’s proud of her. But little did he know, he would soon regret sending her there.
What Reacher's closing lines to Susan meant in Season 3 Episode 4
After hearing the heart-shattering story about Dominique Kohl, DEA agent Susan Duffy reflected on her own past. Something clearly disturbed her, and there was a look of guilt on her face as she explained:
"I didn't pay Teresa to go undercover. I made up a story that the DA who prosecuted her boyfriend on drug charges felt that Teresa held back on her testimony so he'd get a lighter sentence and now the DA wants Teresa to serve time. The kid ain't sophisticated so she bought it. I told her that if she helped me I'd get the DA off her back. But I f*cked up. I f*cked that kid over, and now I have to make it right."
In Episode 1 of the season, Susan told Reacher that Teresa Daniel was unaware that she was "delivery car parts stuffed with coke" for her boyfriend. Then she "busted her, [and] flipped her". Susan knew that Teresa needed money, so she paid her to go on an undercover mission into Beck's operation, where she worked in their warehouse.
However, Teresa disappeared soon after. Nobody knows where she is now. Beck's men claim she never came to work there. According to Susan, Beck caught Teresa spying on him, and they must have her hostage somewhere. Duffy reached out to Reacher for this very reason—she needed him to go find Teresa.
Reacher’s response to her confession wasn’t just a throwaway line. It carried a lot of weight. That's when he and Duffy realized that they were haunted by the same kind of guilt. They had both put people who trusted them in danger.
For Reacher, it was Dominique Kohl. For Duffy, it was Teresa Daniel. Both Reacher and Duffy had to live with the weight of knowing their choices led to tragic consequences.
But it wasn’t just about guilt—it was about understanding. Reacher generally keeps his guard up and doesn't let anyone see the weight he carries. But this time, he opened up. And for Duffy, knowing that someone else understood her regret might have made it just a little easier to bear.
In the end, this scene wasn’t just about wrapping up the story of Kohl and Teresa. It was about showing us that even someone as tough as Reacher isn’t immune to the pain of losing people. It’s what makes him human, and it’s what keeps us rooting for him, no matter what.
