Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie has ended after keeping the audience hooked for ten episodes. The horror crime drama on FX follows Detective Lois Tryon, played by Niecy Nash-Betts, who has to uncover the mystery of a string of gruesome crimes in the town.

As the show progresses, the lines between dreams and reality get blurred as Lois realizes that she has been in a coma and was dreaming about the Grotesquerie murders. However, the killings start for real when Lois wakes up.

In the finale, Lois becomes aware of her husband’s affair and leaves him. It is then revealed that Lois is undergoing treatment at a psychiatric institute, as she has started to believe the dreams she saw while in the coma. Grotesquerie features a cliffhanger ending that leaves the viewers perplexed.

In the Grotesquerie finale, Lois questions her reality, making the audience wonder if she might still be dreaming. Since waking from her coma, she has had a hard time separating dreams from what is real, even feeling like she might be losing her mind.

She tells her therapist, Dr. Witticomb, that she is certain she is dead and trapped in her own personal hell. Witticomb insists she is suffering from Cotard’s Syndrome, which makes people feel like they are dead after extreme stress.

But Lois’ doubts only grow after three strange events: a tense encounter with Marshall, finding her friend Justin’s motel room mysteriously spotless after his death, and a new murder that looks exactly like one from her coma dreams. These events make Lois wonder if she is truly awake.

Things get even more confusing when it is shown that Dr. Witticomb is involved with a sketchy men’s rights group and starts accusing Lois of being the killer. His strange connections make it hard to trust his claim that Lois is living in reality.

In addition, Lois’s former colleagues turn on her, especially after she accuses her other therapist, Charlie, of unprofessional behavior. By the end of the episode, there is still no clear answer about whether Lois is awake or stuck in a nightmare. The mystery is left open, hinting that her chaotic life could be a mix of reality and her troubled mind.

Dr. Charlie meets with an unexpected fate in the Grotesquerie finale. Lois, who suspected the doctor of unethical behavior, believes he had orgies in her hospital room while she was in a coma. She even accuses him of getting an unconscious patient pregnant.

Though Charlie denies these claims, Lois’s suspicions don’t go away. Later, Lois arrives at a disturbing crime scene, where multiple victims are arranged in a twisted version of the Last Supper. In the center, dressed as Jesus, is a crucified Charlie.

Among the other victims is Mary Colsby, a student who had accused Marshall of assault. The setup leaves Lois horrified, but she tells her former co-workers that she knows the killer but does not reveal their names.

Grotesquerie Season 1 ends on a cliffhanger without disclosing who the killer is. The murderer has been recreating the same horrible crimes from Lois’s dreams and stays one step ahead, taunting her with religious symbols and targeting people from her life.

In the finale, Dr. Witticomb even accuses Lois of being the killer, saying that since she knows all the victims, she could be imagining it all. Lois suspects that the real killer is someone with access to her files and personal life. Though she ends the episode claiming she knows the killer's identity, the reveal remains a mystery.

All episodes of Grotesquerie are streaming on Hulu.
