Ryan Murphy's latest horror series Grotesquerie has fans on the edge of their seats with its spine-chilling narrative and gruesome murders. The TV series follows a unique story of detective Lois Tryon and a church reporter and nun Sister Megan Duval, trying to figure out who's Grotesquerie, and his reasons behind killing the resident of the small town.

Grotesquerie's sinister start was enough to guess how terrifying, yet intriguing the TV series is going to be, as horror fans always expect the most unexpected from Murphy. The writer and director is one of the best horror TV show creators, known for his triumphant American Horror Story, which ran for 12 seasons.

Murphy has many horror shows under his name, and his latest Grotesquerie is catching all the attention. As seen in the first episode, Tryon is a complex character, struggling to manage the pressure at work, and worried about her husband's health.

On the other hand, there's Sister Megan, who is an incredibly intelligent and thoughtful nun, who decides to help the detective in the investigation. The two joined forces after the first murder of the Burnside family took place, in which the killer tied the dead bodies of a woman and her children, with food stuffed inside their mouths, and cut off the man's head.

Fans who watched the episodes might wonder how the production team created the unsettling environment, and interestingly Los Angeles was enough to shoot the series. Read more to find out the filming locations of the new FX series.

Unlike most horror dramas, Grotesquerie didn't require many filming locations to capture the eerie environment. As mentioned above, the FX series was extensively filmed in Los Angeles, California.

The renowned city has several filming studios and even offers attractive tax benefits. In 2023, the California Film Commission spent almost $10.35 million in tax credits, making filming in the city more affordable. Los Angeles is blessed with skilled makeup artists, set designers, and photographers, emerging as the ideal filming location for the FX series.

The horror series' filming began in April 30, 2024, and ended in just three months in August 2024. Being a popular filming location, many films and TV series were shot in Los Angeles including Oscar-winning film La La Land, Blade Runner (1982), Quentin Tarantino's globally recognized Pulp Fiction, The Terminator (1984), Christopher Nolan's Inception, and many other blockbusters.

However, the production team didn't completely rely on the real-life locations, as they constructed custom-built sets for more engagement and to get the desired outlook for the series. Here's how the series was filmed:

1) Custom-built sets

One of the elements making Grotesquerie a standout series is the nightmarish quality in each episode. This was made possible through custom-built sets used by the production team to capture the atmosphere.

If you notice, the houses in the town are arranged like a cross, and they were filmed on the sets crafted by the production design team.

2) Barren desert landscapes

The barren lands surrounding Los Angeles were impressively utilized in filming the FX series. A place where you can only see cacti helped in highlighting Tryon's loneliness and feeling of isolation as she's got too much to handle.

Through the desert landscapes, fans can experience both, the creepy atmosphere and Tryon's emotional struggle.

3) Small town setting

Though specific buildings or street names remain unknown, the production team crafted the small-town atmosphere using both, sets and real locations. The empty spaces and rundown buildings seen in Grotesquerie are a combination of real locations in Los Angeles and custom-built sets.

These isolated places in the small town add to the mysterious and unsettling environment. The crime scenes were also filmed in the same way, using real-life locations and sets.

4) Local diners

The diner scenes where the characters like Nicholas Chavez's Father Charlie and Sister Megan are seen having a conversation also play a crucial role in advancing the narrative. They were also captured in Los Angeles, California, recognized as the entertainment capital.
