TV actor Martin Henderson, who made a mark as Dr. Nathan Riggs on Grey’s Anatomy, has just given hope to millions of fans about a potential return on the show. Henderson's Dr. Riggs was introduced in Season 12 of the long-running medical drama, as a prospective love interest for Ellen Pompeo's Dr. Meredith Grey, and, so far, was last seen in Season 14.

Henderson, popular for his romantic roles, said this about a possible return on Grey’s Anatomy, during an interview with Deadline:

“I haven’t given it a lot of thought, just because I’ve been so committed and busy with Virgin River and some other stuff and life. But I think Shonda Rhimes has always been really supportive of me; we’ve actually worked together a bunch of times on different things, so I would always be open to the possibility. Again, if it fitted in with whatever else was going on in my life at the time and my career.”

The first time we see Dr. Nathan Riggs is in The Me Nobody Knows, the sixth episode of Season 12 of Grey’s Anatomy. He is introduced to the viewers as a cardiothoracic attending in Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Soon, Nathan starts seeing Dr. Meredith Grey, around the time when she is a widow mourning the loss of her husband, Dr. Derek Shepherd.

Their relationship turns serious but a shocking twist is in store — Nathan's fiancée Megan Hunt, who was presumed dead, is actually alive. This happens in the finale of Grey’s Anatomy Season 13, and Meredith convinces Nathan to return to his ex-fiancée. Initially, Megan is unconvinced that Nathan has moved on from Meredith but they reconcile when he manages to bring her son, Farouk, from Iraq. Nathan and his family leave for Los Angeles in Episode 5 of Season 14, titled Danger Zone.

Megan later appears in Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 1, titled Here Comes the Sun, and reveals that she and Nathan have split. A lot of viewers have expressed disappointment at this long-winded storyline ending up nowhere. This is why fans hope for Martin Henderson's return on Grey’s Anatomy. When asked about returning as Dr. Nathan Riggs, the actor said:

“As long as I felt that the character had something to do and I could give something, because I don’t think they really knew what to do with Nathan. It was almost like a stopgap measure. With the departure of Derek. It was like, oh, we need a love interest. And so he, and by virtue I, was dropped into this world, but I don’t think he was ever that defined. If I were to go back, I would have to make sure that there was a really clear plan for why he was there.”
