Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Episode 12 recap: Meredith's Alzheimer’s research faces a major setback

Meredith and Amelia's Alzheimer’s research still requires funding, as Catherine made it very clear that they won't receive any financial support from Grey Sloan. As previously mentioned, Catherine didn't want to let Meredith secure funding, and now she has partnered with someone who wishes the same.

The struggle continues in Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Episode 12 "Ridin Solo" as the two hoped that publishing their research online would help. However, things go wrong when Tom Koracick swoops in and uses their work to apply for his own Blaisdell Grant.

As seen in the episode, Meredith and Amelia are startled to learn that Koracick didn't even ask them before using their work. Not only this, but he has also outperformed them by testing a potential cure on mice with promising results.

When Meredith expresses her disappointment, Tom Koracick explains that the research was published online, which means anyone can use it. At the same time, Catherine was now financially backing Koracick, and the only thing he wants if full credit.

However, Meredith's goal in this research was to help families suffering from Dementia. For her, it was a mission, but Koracick viewed it as a competition and eventually won the grant.

This leads Meredith to make a drastic decision. She will continue the research using her personal savings. As seen in the previous episodes of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith has faced financial strain, but she has decided not to abandon the research.

While Meredith and Amelia face a setback in Boston, things get a little weird between Jules and Monica. At first, Jules is surprised to see that the woman she hooked up with last night is in town with a patient needing pediatric surgery.

To make things worse, Jules learns that she's none other than Monica's ex-wife, leading to extreme awkwardness. As the Grey's Anatomy episode continues, Jules makes a mistake and freezes during the surgery. Thanks to Monica, who helped her regain focus and later advised her to keep her personal life separate from work.

Meanwhile, Simone noticed something unusual with Lucas’s patient and found a tumor. Her quick thinking results in Bailey allowing her to perform the surgery, which marks a big milestone in her career. Lucas, however, was acting odd after becoming a second-year intern. While he's struggling with the idea, no one at the hospital seems to have noticed this.
