Lucas Adams first appears in season 19. He is determined to prove himself as a surgeon and joins an internship program at Grey Sloan with Simone Griffith. He didn't want to become a doctor until he had an accident in his Junior college. The incident led to his respect for the profession. Lucas lived as a part of Shepherd's family.
Lucas never connected with other interns. This made them assume that he was sleeping with Amelia as she always used to leave her son Scout with Lucas comfortably. This resulted in absurdly captivating stories about the shepherds and Lucas until Amelia forced him to reveal their connection.
Amelia supports Lucas through challenges in surgical residency, Grey's Anatomy Season 21
In season 20 Amelia and Lucas's relationship continues through all the ebbs and flows. Season 21 again hints a bit about Lucas's relationship with Derek but still doesn't give too much information about how they are related. Episode 2 emphasizes Lucas' similarities with Derek. Amelia first doubts Lucas' capability as he was one of a lazy intern but later realizes his true potential.
In season 19 of Grey's Anatomy, Amelia suggests that Meredith hire Lucas because he reminds her of Derek, to which she points out,
“Derek was a God to him,” Amelia says. “And Lucas was Derek’s favorite nephew — and I do love him, so I hate to keep saying this, but I don’t think he has what it takes. I mean, he’s a mess. He doesn’t follow instructions. He has to do everything his own way.”
Amelia became the informal mentor to Lucas, taking him through all the challenges involved in Surgical residency. There is professional respect between both of them with a tinge of familial tension.
