Gregory might be Ava's most appropriate replacement in Abbott Elementary (but it could still cause a few problems)

A huge shake-up in Abbott Elementary has left fans spinning, with Ava Coleman (played by Janelle James) officially thrown out of the principal’s role. Her exit from the role opens up an important leadership post, and the question on everyone’s mind is—who will take her place to replace her? While there are a few likely candidates, one name stands out, and that is that of Gregory Eddie (played by Tyler James Williams).

Gregory’s educational headship background and long-standing ambitions to be a principal make him the most rational candidate. Nonetheless, regardless of his credentials, stepping into Ava’s shoes could present him with some grave challenges, personally as well as from the perspective of the school.

Gregory has always been meant for the job

From the very start of Abbott Elementary, Gregory’s career route felt like it had been destined for school supervision. Brought in as a substitute teacher, he initially applied for the principal's position even before Ava could land the job.

Even though he grew into and learnt through his role as a teacher and found a deep sense of fruition, his initial ambition and goals never entirely faded away.

Recent plotlines have also alluded to Gregory’s financial matters, which could serve as a purpose for him to re-evaluate and think again when it comes to applying for the principal role.

Given that school administrators earn more money than teachers, the career ladder might be too tempting not to climb. With his leadership skills and actual familiarity when it comes to the needs of the school, he seems to be the apt fit for the role of principal.

Could Gregory’s Promotion Disrupt Abbott Elementary?

While Gregory might be the clear choice, his switch from teacher to principal wouldn’t go along without a few bumps. His method and approach towards what it means to be a leader are quite different than that of Ava’s, whose unusual yet effective style has taken the spot as a crucial element within the show.

Even when Ava was the most reckless principal/person in a position of authority, her presence and unfathomable (even if unconventional) attention towards the school grew out of an unusual work culture that surprisingly worked…until it didn’t.

On the other hand, Gregory has showcased a much more organised and follow-the-rules, solely by-the-book approach. A previous episode highlighted his stern leadership approach when he temporarily stepped in as acting principal, emphasising his inclination to micromanage everything.

If he were to officially take over as principal, the teachers at Abbott Elementary might work under a more inflexible administration.

Moreover, Gregory’s promotion could put pressure on his relationship with Janine Teagues (played by Quinta Brunson). Involving himself in a romance with his direct subordinate could come forth with concerns that are morally and ethically wrong, and his new role as principal at Abbott Elementary might create stress between the two of them, particularly given Janine’s previous irritations with the establishment.

Will Ava be gone for good?

Despite being fired, Ava maintains her spot of being one of the most well-loved characters on Abbott Elementary. Her character arc, going from a self-serving principal to someone who frankly cares about the school and its environment, has been a major focus of the series.

While Gregory might step into the big role for now, it’s difficult to imagine Abbott Elementary undyingly moving forward without Ava. Whether or not she finds a way back to her position as principal or takes on a whole new role within the premises of the school, it’s plausible that her story isn’t over just yet.

For now, all eyes are on what’s next for Abbott Elementary—and whether Gregory will take up the role as principal.
