Goosebumps is all set to return with its second season on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2025. Based on R. L. Stine’s eponymous children’s horror novels, the anthology series is known for its dark tone, spooky visuals, and shadowy figures.
In the second season, subtitled The Vanishing, the show follows Anthony, whose brother disappeared thirty years ago after he accepted a dare to sleep in an old fort. When Anthony’s kids come up with a similar dare in the present, his past begins to haunt him.
Goosebumps season 2 will feature 10 episodes, including a found-footage style installment, mimicking the 1999 classic horror film The Blair Witch Project. Series creator and showrunner have now talked about the episode, revealing how they got Blair Witch co-director Eduardo Sánchez onboard to helm it.
Goosebumps creators discuss Blair Witch-like found-footage episode in season 2
One of the episodes in Goosebumps: The Vanishing has been directed by Eduardo Sánchez, the co-writer and co-director of The Blair Witch Project. It has been shot with a hand-held camera, completely immersing the audience into the show’s world and providing a more authentic feel.
In an interview with Screen Rant, series co-developer Rob Letterman and showrunner Hilary Winston opened up about the episode, revealing budget constraints were one one the reasons why they chose to go the found-footage way.
The two further disclosed when they decided to go ahead with the special episode, they wanted to hire the best found-footage director and reached out to Sánchez. Letterman said:
“We don't have a ton of money, so we try to get our production value out of just being in the real world as much as possible, so that becomes the look. So, there's certain things that are [key], the look is set and the style is set, and then casting the directors the way we cast the actors.”
It continues -
“Like, ‘This is the story. This is this episode. It's going to be a found-footage episode, so who would be the best found-footage director we can get? Oh, how about the guy who directed Blair Witch Project? Yeah. Okay, that makes sense.’ And suddenly we're on a Zoom with Eduardo Sánchez.”
Winston then stated how they exchanged ideas about the episode with Sánchez, and he eventually agreed to work on the show:
“Yeah, Zooming with Eduardo Sánchez and telling him our idea for the episode, and he's giving us ideas back.”
Winston had previously talked about the episode during the New York Comic Con in October 2024, stating she had watched its first cut and was stunned by it. It remains to be seen how the episode will fit into the overall narrative of Goosebumps season 2, but it will surely raise the show's chilling factor.
