Hulu's upcoming true-crime drama series, Good American Family, is based on the bizarre case of a Ukraine-born American child, Natalia Grace, who was adopted by the Barnett family in 2010 and later abandoned.

Good American Family will view Natalie's story from a new perspective and debut on Hulu on March 19, 2025. Earlier, a documentary film trilogy titled The Curious Case Of Natalia Grace was released on Max, which covered the shocking case.

Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo takes up her first acting role since portraying Dr. Meredith Grey, starring as Kristine Barnett, Grace's adoptive mother, on the show created by Katie Robbins.

Good American Family will premiere with a double episode on Hulu on March 19, 2025. The show will have a total of eight episodes, which will then be released weekly on the platform for US viewers. However, viewers will be able to watch both Episodes 1 and 2 on the streaming day.

There is no confirmed date for an international release as of yet, but considering that the show is a Hulu original, it might be available on Disney+ for viewers outside the US.

What is Good American Family about?

As mentioned above, Good American Family is the real-life story of a Ukrainian child, Natalia Grace, which became national news in 2019.

Grace, a Ukrainian-born American, was diagnosed with a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. After she was adopted by an American family in 2010, at the age of seven, the family suspected that Grace was actually an adult and was lying about her age.

The Barnetts petitioned the Marion County court to change Grace's birth year from 2003 to 1989, placed her in an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana, and left for Canada with their three biological children.

The new Hulu series will look at this curious case with a new lens, considering all sides of the story. The official synopsis of the show reads as follows:

“Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism...''

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Pompeo discussed how the series will be a different exploration of Grace's story with a new twist:

“We’re coming up with our own version of what this story could have been, so this isn’t sort of a beat-for-beat of what their experience was,”

She added:

“It’s really what we do here, I guess, in Hollywood. We make entertainment that hopefully provokes thought, and we take a set of circumstances and put our spin on it.”

Who is in the cast of Good American Family?

The complete cast of the Hulu series is as follows:

  • Ellen Pompeo as Kristine Barnett
  • Imogen Faith Reid as Natalia Grace
  • Mark Duplass as Michael Barnett
  • Christina Hendricks as Cynthia Mans
  • Sarayu Blue as Valika
