Good American Family dramatizes the real-life disturbing case of Natalia Grace. As revealed in the first two episodes of Good American Family that recently premiered on Hulu, Natalia Grace was adopted by the regular American family of Kristine and Michael Barnett. But it wasn't long before they discovered to their dismay that this Ukrainian child, whom they thought suffered from a rare form of dwarfism, had more secrets to hide than they thought of.
The first two episodes of Good American Family have effectively set the tone for the rest of the six episodes to follow. The narrative is told from multiple perspectives and often jumps in between time owing to its non-linear structure.
Here's everything we know about the first two episodes.
What happened on Good American Family episode 1?
The first episode of the Hulu show opened with Kristine Barnett, played by Ellen Pompeo, delivering a speech marking the publication of her book in 2019. However, her moment of glory is cut short when she is arrested on an allegation of child negligence right in front of her three boys, one of whom, Jacob, is autistic. The show then takes us back to the year 2010, where we see that all of Kristine and Michael's plans to adopt a girl child in order to complete their family have failed, thus straining their relationship.
It was thus only natural that Kristine jumped at the news when the First Path Adoption Center contacted her with the news that there was a girl who suffered from dwarfism and needed a family immediately. Upon visiting the adoption center, things started to look a bit spooky as Natalia showed up with a walker, and Katherine was also forced to pay $7000 for her previous surgeries.
After bringing Natalia home, Katherine tries to make her accustomed to their domestic life, but Natalia turns out to be quite full of surprises. She is often defiant, jealous of her brothers, and once pushes Katherine while the latter attempts to bathe her. Katherine eventually grows weary and comes to suspect that Natalia isn't telling the truth about her past.
The first episode of Good American Family ends with Natalia ominously standing by Kristine's bed at night, holding a knife.
What happened on Good American Family episode 2?
The second episode of the Hulu show begins with Michael's point of view in 2019 when he speaks to a private investigator about Kristine's alleged negligence of Natalia. Jumping back to 2010, we see that Kristine finds it incredibly difficult to have Natalia in her home after the school she was admitted to informs Katherine that all of Natalia's past medical records and vaccination certificates appear to be incomplete and forged.
Following this up, Katherine tries to get in touch with the adoption centre from where she got Katherine, only to find that they have closed shop following allegations of human trafficking. By the end of the episode, Katherine stars harboring a belief that Natalia isn't a child afterall, following the discovery of her pubic hair.
