Hulu's latest docu-series, Good American Family, has re-sparked public interest in the curious case of Natalia Grace, a child with a rare form of dwarfism who was first adopted and later abandoned by an American couple.

In 2010, Natalia Grace, an orphan from Ukraine, was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett, who later filed a petition against their adoptive daughter for masquerading her age and being an adult.

In 2012, the Barnetts claimed that Natalia was 22 years old, not 7-8 as she claimed. While their initial petition was confirmed, a new blood test in 2023 confirmed that Natalia was 8 years old in 2010.

Even after the evidence, Natalia's parents did not serve any jail time or go to prison. Michael and Kristine were found not guilty in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

More on the Barnetts' whereabouts as shown in Good American Family in our story.

Good American Family: What happened to Natalia Grace's parents after their petition?

Two years after adopting Natalia, Kristine and Michael Barnett started noticing Natalia's strange behavior, as shown in Good American Family. They finally acted upon it and petitioned the Marion County Probate Court to legally change their adoptive daughter's birth year from 2003 to 1989 and also expressed their wish to give up their parental rights over her.

Their claims included that Natalia had pubic hair, grown-up features, and menstruation, which supported their claim of her being an adult. They also accused their adoptive daughter of making threats towards them, hiding a weapon in her bedroom, and even trying to poison Kristine's coffee.

All of their claims were justified, and the court initially approved their petition and changed Natalia's birth year to 1989. After their initial petition, the Barnetts placed Natalia in an apartment in Lafayette and moved to Canada with their biological children.

According to a document by the Indiana Court of Appeals, the Barnetts claimed:

''[they have helped Natalia by] obtaining federal disability benefits and supportive services to help her transition to life as an adult"

While their petition was justified, and Natalia's birth year was changed in 2012, a blood test in 2023 refuted this claim. The new blood test confirmed that Natalia Grace is 22 years old, confirming that she was in fact only around 9 years old when the Barnetts adopted her.

Talking about this new evidence, Grace said on the docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks:

"It just proves that I was not lying about my age. They ignored everything that was pointing to the truth just so they could create this stupid lie."

While their petition was refuted, neither of the Barnetts served jail time or faced any consequences for their claims. While Michael was acquitted in 2022, his wife, Kristine, was freed from all legal charges in 2023.

According to People Magazine, Kristine Barnett claimed this in one of her [now deleted] Facebook posts:

"If there had been any abuse of Natalia or evidence of it, I would have been found guilty of it and I would be in jail...I believe Natalia takes advantage of that sympathy to manipulate people."

Good American Family: Where are the Barnetts now?

According to TODAY, Michael Barnett filed for a divorce from his wife in 2014, which was finalized in 2018. While the Barnetts accused Natalia of displaying strange behavior, Michael confessed in an ID docu-series that it was his wife, Kristine, who was at fault:

“I had the same monster you did. I was exceptionally controlled and put down and threatened, was minimalized, anything that was who I was was ripped from me and I was guided and instructed to be exactly what she wanted me to be,"

While Kristine has dismissed her husband and Natalia's accusations in the docu-series, she has remained private since 2019. In 2013, she published a memoir titled The Spark: A Mother's Story of Nurturing, Genius, and Autism, detailing the journey of one of her biological sons, who has autism.

Good American Family is available to stream on Hulu.
