Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure, the upcoming Netflix docuseries will share the journey of common people hunting for treasure. The story behind this docuseries features Forrest Fenn, an art dealer and a revered figure by treasure hunters, who organized a treasure hunt that lasted a decade.
In 2010, the dealer who isn't with us anymore buried a treasure chest containing precious jewels and gold in an unknown location. Fenn provided treasure hunters with only two hints, that he buried the chest somewhere in the mountains to the north of Santa Fe, a poem of 24 lines containing the clues of the treasure's location. It wasn't until June 8, 2020, that the treasure was finally found.
The three-episode long Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure will reportedly take viewers on an adventure of a lifetime interviewing all the people who participated in this decade-long treasure hunt. Also, this docuseries is releasing on March 27, 2025, may involve the participation of Jack Stuef, the man who found the treasure.
What is Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure about?
As stated earlier, Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure will follow treasure hunters trying to unearth the treasure buried by Forrest Fenn in 2010. This hunt, which finally ended in 2020, is rich with several stories that will hook viewers who like a good adventure story. Based on the trailer above, we can also see that these treasure hunters have to traverse a dangerous terrain with nothing but hope and greed to encourage them.
The docuseries may also hint at the treasure's future hiding spot. The synopsis for Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure reads:
"In 2010, 80 year-old Forrest Fenn hid a treasure worth millions in the mountains north of Santa Fe. The key to finding it lay within a cryptic 24-line poem, spurring a decade-long treasure hunt where people gave up their jobs, their families, and even their lives in pursuit of Fenn’s fortune. Now, for the community of devoted hunters, this dangerous pursuit of gold has become an obsessive search for the meaning of truth. This docuseries will focus on a treasure hunt where the treasure is actually found — something exceedingly rare — and how far people will go to get it."
Who is Forrest Fenn? Explaining the man that inspired Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure:
Forrest Fenn was a respected dealer and author in the world of art. He was born on 22 August 1930 and passed just a few months after the unearthing of the treasure on 7 September 2020. While he was already respected amongst art enthusiasts, Fenn gained notoriety in 2010.
He was the orchestrator of a treasure hunt that lasted almost a decade when he buried a chest containing treasures in a densely vegetated area. The end of the treasure hunt was confirmed by Fenn himself on June 18, 2020. He said:
"I can confirm it’s been found. It was found by a man from back East, but he’s shy. He doesn’t want his name released."
While the then 89-year-old Fenn did disclose the treasure's location to the interviewer, he confirmed that the poem helped the then-unidentified Jack Stuef to locate the treasure. His exact quote to NPR was:
"It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago. I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot."
While Jack Stuef, the man who found the treasure, remained unnamed for almost three months, he outed himself on September 23, 2020, through a remembrance he wrote on Medium. Given his significance, some are hoping that Stuef will appear in Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure.
Gold & Greed: The Hunt For Fenn's Treasure will consist of three episodes, and will begin streaming on Netflix on March 27, 2025.
