God of War fans have some exciting news coming their way!
Kratos is officially heading to Prime Video. And Amazon isn’t holding back. The streaming giant has already committed to two seasons of God of War even before a single frame has been shot.
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore confirmed this news in an interview with Katee Sackhoff on The Sackhoff Show. He shared:
“Right now I’m working on an adaptation of a video game called God of War. It’s a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of. They’ve asked me to come in and I’m literally in the writers’ room working on that.”
It’s a bold move indeed. But Fallout has taught us that Amazon knows how to turn a beloved gaming franchise into a TV sensation.
Now that the God of War series is finally gaining momentum fans are eager to see how Kratos’ story plays out on screen. So who’s steering the ship? How closely will the show stick to the games? And what makes Amazon so confident in its success?
Here’s everything we know so far.
God of Wars: A rocky road to production
The journey to bring God of War to television hasn’t been smooth sailing. Initially, Rafe Judkins of The Wheel of Time was set to be the showrunner, while Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus of Iron Man were the producers. However, creative differences led to their departure, leaving the project's future uncertain in 2024.
Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: The Next Generation) has taken over as showrunner, now and is shaping the series' vision.
No casting announcements have been made, yet but the writers’ room seems to be in full swing so more updates should arrive soon.
Amazon’s commitment to two seasons suggests that the company is banking on God of War to be a major hit. This is similar to its handling of Fallout, which did not just shatter streaming records but also saw a massive surge in game sales.
Could God of War see a similar resurgence? If we go by history we may soon see a rise of players picking up Kratos’ axe once the show drops.
God of Wars: Amazon's confidence on it
As mentioned above, Amazon has already given the go-ahead for a second season even though God of War Season 1 is still in pre-production.
Now Moore isn’t exactly a hardcore gamer. He openly admitted that modern controllers confuse him but his track record with sci-fi and epic storytelling makes him a promising choice for the job.
Moreover, PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures Television are co-producing the series. And God of War game director Cory Barlog is on board as an executive producer. These are really strong and positive signs for fans who want to see Kratos’ story done right.
One big question is which part of Kratos’ story will the show adopt? Will we get the raging Spartan warrior tearing through Greek gods in a bloody quest for vengeance from the original God of War trilogy? Or will the series start with the more mature and bearded Kratos of the Norse saga who struggles with fatherhood and fate?
So far Amazon has confirmed that the show will follow the 2018 God of War reboot. And that means we’ll see Kratos and his son Atreus. They will be on a journey through Norse mythology.
That’s great news for those who loved the emotional depth of the recent game but it also means we might not get to see Kratos’ Greek-era backstory in full detail. Could there be flashbacks? Perhaps a prequel episode down the line? Only time will tell.
God of War has the potential to be Prime Video’s next breakout hit. So now while we’re still waiting on casting news and an expected release date, one thing is certain Kratos’ journey from the battlefield to the small screen is officially underway.
The only question left is who will play Kratos? Tell us your choices in the comments, below.
