The Green Arrow remains uncast in Peter Safran and James Gunn's DCU after all. This comes in the heel of Lanterns actor Garret Dillahunt posting an image of himself in the Emerald Archer costume this week on his Instagram stories. Turns out it might not be real after all. The actor himself confirmed this through his latest Instagram post on April 25, 2025.

He was not the only one, though. James Gunn also confirmed that Dillahunt is not playing the Emerald Archer in the new DCU in a reply to a fan through his Threads account. Thus, the status of the Green Arrow in Gunn and Safran's DCU remains unknown. But considering Creature Commandos' Nina Mazursky lived in Star City, fans remain hopeful that the DCU casts its Oliver Queen soon.

Garret Dillahunt explains the Green Arrow rumor he started:

On April 25, 2025, the actor, who is set to appear in the upcoming DC HBO series Lanterns, clarified the two images he posted on his Instagram stories.

Turns out, the actor dressed up as Star City's protector, Green Arrow, for Halloween a few years ago. This was confirmed by Dillahunt himself on the Instagram post, with the following caption:

"No no no! Me? I should be so lucky, but no. Just a Halloween costume from a few years back. I’m just a nerd just a fan. Unless they want one-legged, conspiracy-theorist paranoid old man Ollie, then maybe I have a shot. But…no. No intent to rile up. ❤️❤️ 🙏🏼🙏🏼"

This would probably mean that Green Arrow is not making his DCU debut through Lanterns. It should also be noted that Garret Dillahunt is 60 years old, and if Gunn is looking to cast the Emerald Archer in the DCU, he might be looking for a younger actor to play the role.

Who is Garret Dillahunt playing in Lanterns, then?

Instead of Green Arrow, the actor will play the character dubbed a modern-day cowboy, William Macon. Looks like he might be one of the roadblocks that our heroes, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, will have to overcome in the HBO series while they solve the mysterious murder. Consisting of eight episodes, the logline for the show reads:

"The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."

Other than Garret Dillahunt, Lanterns boasts of other cast members like:

  1. Kyle Chandler is playing Hal Jordan
  2. Aaron Pierre is playing John Stewart
  3. Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner
  4. Kelly Macdonald is playing Sheriff Kerry
  5. Jason Ritter is playing William's son, Billy Macon
  6. Poorna Jagannathan is playing Zoe
  7. Ulrich Thomsen is playing Sinestro
  8. Paul Ben-Victor is playing Antaan
  9. Chris Coy is playing "Waylon Sanders"

Written by Tom King and Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy will be serving as the showrunner for this series. Here is what Mundy had to say about the plot of Lanterns:

“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

If the production moves according to plan, Lanterns will be airing on HBO somewhere in early 2026.
