Shark Tank mentor Robert Herjavec recently appeared on The School of Greatness podcast hosted by Lewis Howes. During the podcast episode, aired on February 5, 2025, the investor opened up about various things.
While discussing different types of mindsets and how Robert overcame hardships, he talked about the "blue-collar poverty mindset" and the "wealth abundance mindset."
"There is a fundamental difference between the blue-collar poverty mindset and the wealth abundance mindset. And when I learned in that moment is, I literally freaking couldn't give more. I was sleeping four hours a day. I was great at my task, I was driving my company as hard as I possibly could and it gave me one Ferrari," stated the Shark Tank investor.
Shark Tank mentor Robert Herjavec recalls how his father worked and how it shaped him
In one of the segments on the podcast, when the host, Lewis Howes, asked the Shark Tank mentor about "hard work" and "creating wealth," Robert Herjavec recalled how his dad was the "hardest working human being" and how it helped him.
Robert Herjavec replied:
"My dad worked in the factory his whole life. Two shifts. Paid off his house in his lifetime. Super succesful guy in his world. I will never work a day in my life harder than my dad worked, ever. That man was the hardest-working human being I'd ever come across. Just because you'll work hard, though, doesn't mean you'll be rich. What it means is you won't be poor."
Shark Tank's mentor mentioned a "fundamental difference" between the blue-collar poverty mindset and the wealth abundance mindset. Before getting into the discussion, earlier on the podcast, they talked about how Robert gave "everything," and he bought his first Ferrari.
Referring to the two mindsets, he mentioned sleeping four hours a day and doing everything he could at his work. As a result, "it gave me one Ferrari."
Further, during the discussion, the tech entrepreneur mentioned that people often "misunderstand" the "wanting more" part. He demonstrated how individuals would be; they're like:
"Oh yeah, I'd like more Ferraris." It was never about more Ferraris, it was just about, "How do I get more." How do I get more value, more worth. How do I get a better life. And so I said, "Yes, I definitely want more. Why not...why not me."
Shark Tank investor shared that the "big lesson" was that individuals need to "pivot."
"Hard work is absolutely foundational but smart work is pivoting," shared Robert.
The host asked him what he learned from going from "hard work to smart work" to create more financial abundance. He replied that it was "value."
The entrepreneur mentioned that "markets and people" would pay for the value, not the time. He said people would pay for "knowledge" but not for how long you've been doing it. He recalled that he wasn't "creating that" for his customers. He also added that he wasn't "learning" enough.
