A television adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ fantasy romance novel Fourth Wing is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The book, which hit the shelves in May 2023, was acquired for adaptation by the studio in the same year.

While the project is still in the early development stage, its popularity has gotten fans excited. Set in a fantasy world, the novel, and hence the show, tells the story of a 20-year-old girl named Violet Sorrengail.

Violet is forced to train to become a dragon rider by her mother, who serves as a General in Navarre’s military. Stakes skyrocket for the protagonist as becoming a rider comes with the risk of getting killed by the dragon, and the fellow riders. Here are all the updates we have about the Fourth Wing television series.

What is Fourth Wing about?

Fourth Wing is set in the fantasy world of Basgiath War College, where students can either graduate or die. The school has four groups: dragon riders, healers, infantry, and scribes. The story focuses on Violet Sorrengail, who starts as a scribe, but her strict mother forces her to join the dangerous dragon riders group.

Violet struggles at her college as she is weaker than her fellow students. To make things worse, Xaden Riorson, the son of a rebel her mother executed, seems to hate her. While Violet believes Xaden wants her dead, things change between the two as they begin to interact.

Meanwhile, outside the school, a war ensues between two kingdoms. The kingdom of Navarre, which possesses dragons, fights against the kingdom of Poromiel, which has griffins. As Violet fights to survive at her college, she discovers secrets that could the course of the war.

Who is creating the Fourth Wing television series?

The series was confirmed to be in the works at Amazon MGM Studios in October 2023. The studio has partnered up with Michael B. Jordan’s production company Outlier Society to produce the series.

Moira Walley-Beckett has come on board as the showrunner for the project. The Emmy-winning screenwriter has earlier worked as a story editor and producer on the critically acclaimed crime drama Breaking Bad.

She has also written episodes for hit shows like Anne with an E and Flesh and Bone. The novel’s author, Rebecca Yarros, serves as an executive producer on the television series along with Liz Pelletier and Liz Raposo.

Has the star cast of Fourth Wing been announced?

As of now, no cast members have been confirmed for the series. The only update Rebecca Yarros has given about the casting is that a person of color would be playing a major character in the show.

The novel features some fascinating characters including the protagonist Violet Sorrengail, her love interest Xaden Riorson, and her mother General Lilith Sorrengail. It remains to be seen which actors will be finalized to play these iconic roles in the show.

Is there a release date for Fourth Wing?

As the show is currently in the early development stages, its release date has not been announced. Since the series has been picked up by Amazon MGM Studios, it is expected to premiere on Prime Video. However, we need to wait for an official confirmation about the show's release date and streaming platform.

Meanwhile, the Fourth Wing universe continues to grow as Rebecca Yarros has already come up with two sequel books, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. She plans to release a total of five books in the series. Hence, the TV series creators have enough material to continue the story across multiple seasons if Amazon MGM chooses to renew the series for further installments.
