Charlie Brooker's speculative fiction anthology series Black Mirror Season 7, returned on Netflix with six new episodes, featuring harrowing tales of the near future and what all AI technologies can do.
While the show is famous for its bleak take on technology, Episode 3, Hotel Reverie, starring Issa Rae and Emma Corrin, delivered a beautiful sapphic tale between two women.
Black Mirror Season 7's Hotel Reverie follows a bored Hollywood actress, Brandy, who wants to work in a classic romance movie like Casablanca. Her studio uses the Redream software, which allows modern stars to enter and work in yesteryear's classic movies by stepping into them.
Brandy is transported to one of her favorite classic movies, Hotel Reverie, where she falls in love with her co-star Dorothy.
Rae and Corrin's transformation into 40s heroines was visually beautiful, and even the actress was left stunned by Corrin's transformation into Dorothy.

Issa Rae opens up on working with Emma Corrin in Black Mirror Season 7
While most of Brooker's tales in the anthology series are grim reminders of what AI and technology can achieve, stories like 'Hotel Reverie' in Black Mirror Season 7 provide a more hopeful side.
In addition to portraying a beautiful visual tale of yesteryear, Hotel Reverie also delivers a romantic saga between two women who couldn't be together. From costume to hair, the actresses' transformations into 40s heroines were spot-on, and even Rae praised her co-star on her transformation into Dorothy (via Collider):
''...that transformation that Emma makes was crazy. I found myself being transfixed by just the slightest movement that they would take on, like the flutter of an eye.''
Talking about how effortlessly Corrin transformed into Dorothy, Rae added:
''Emma embodies Dorothy in a way where I felt like I was actually working with the ‘40s starlet. And the accent that they perfected was perfect because that was such a made-up accent during that time...It was just really amazing to watch them perfect that.''
Exploring the bitter sweet ending of Black Mirror Season 7 Hotel Reverie
Black Mirror Season 7 Hotel Reverie is as close one could get to a happy ending in the anthology series because they usually have very bleak conclusions.
In the final moments of the episode, as Dorothy dies in her lover's arms, Brandy struggles to say her final lines, which would transport her back to the real world. Eventually, she manages to say her final lines and is transported back to the real world, a seeming end to her romance with Dorothy.
But after her movie is a smashing hit, she receives a Redream package with a rotary phone that allows her to re-connect with Dorothy, hinting at a long-distance phone romance between the two, as the credits roll.
While the ending did not conventionally reunite the two lovers, it is bittersweet. Talking to Collider about Season 7 Episode 3's ending, Rae said:
''It was bittersweet because they'd experienced this love, and that was real to Brandy. While she was able to have this connection with Dorothy again, there was still something really lonely about it. “This is the only remnant of it that I have left, and I have to build it, and I hope that she remembers what we felt.”
