Game of Thrones might have come to an end on HBO, but its legacy still lingers on to this day. While some might opine that the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones pales in comparison to its earlier seasons, there's no doubt that the George R. R. Martin adaptation was a veritable tour de force.
Among the many memorable characters on Game of Thrones, the character of Arya Stark, played by the phenomenal Maisie Williams, is especially remarkable.
Maisie Williams appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon back on April 2, 2019 ahead of the April 14, 2019 release of the final season of Game of Thrones. During her appearance, she accidentally spilled a spoiler from the HBO show's final season, revealing that her character Arya Stark dies in the second episode.
Here's everything that we know.
What did Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams reveal about her character Arya Stark to Jimmy Fallon?
Maisie William's appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon was memorable in the sense that she began by talking about the defining moments on the show that went on to have a significant impact on her character Arya Stark. These included the incident of Ned's beheading from the first season, Arya's being with the hound in season three and so on.
Jimmy Fallon then nudged Williams to drop any breadcrumbs from the then upcoming final season of the HBO show. Williams initially hesitated, stating that she is not at liberty to reveal anything as the network has issued a lot of memos and presumably made her sign several Non-Disclosure Agreements.
"During shooting the final days were really like emotional, saying goodbye to one of the cast because when I found out that Arya died like in the second episode. I was..."
Williams then immediately gasped in horror at the idea of having revealed a telling plot detail. Although Fallon tried to reassure her that they could edit this bit out, Williams wasn't convinced and ran away backstage. Fallon followed her, only to come out together and reveal that it was an April Fool's Day prank after all.
Maisie Williams speaks about resenting her character from Game of Thrones
Maisie Williams gave an exclusive interview to GQ Magazine back in April 2022, in which she revealed that she resented her character from the HBO show:
"I think that when I started becoming a woman, I resented Arya because I couldn’t express who I was becoming, and then I also resented my body, because it wasn’t aligned with the piece of me that the world celebrated.”
When asked if she missed any aspects of her character, Williams noted:
"I don’t think it’s healthy (to miss it), because I loved it, I look at it so fondly, and I look at it with such pride. But why would I want to make myself feel sad about the greatest thing that ever happened to me? I don’t want to associate that with feelings of pain.”
Game of Thrones is exclusively available on HBO.
