Shark Tank investor, Kevin O'Leary, has proposed a deal to TikTok to buy the algorithm at $20 billion. He is calling this the Project Liberty and in a recent reel on his Instagram, shared the details of how he envisions the future of the application to be.
Previously, he has talked about how a lot of businesses and American citizens depend on TikTok for their livelihoods and the app going dark meant that their source of income will be taken away.
The host at Yahoo! Finance asks the Shark Tank investor about his competitive advantage against the big names in the industry. He says:
"Kevin, let's say you buy TikTok, you now have this revamped American version. But you'd be going head to head with some big companies with smart engineers and some of the deepest pockets out there. I mean, Meta and Alphabet, you know, Snap. And those are just the big players. What would be your competitive advantages in that space?"
Talking about what his advantage is, Shark Tank's Kevin replies:
"170 million users. That's my competitive advantage. But it gets better. When we solve this problem for parents and for companies and for the government which will not use this product. When we solve it, we will immediately increase our base but it gets better.
Continuing about his global plans for Tiktok, Kevin said:
Frank and I are gonna fly over to India and meet with Modi and say listen, why don't we light up those 210 million users you turned off in 2020? Same with Switzerland, France, Germany, England, Canada."
Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary shares his purpose behind Project Liberty
Project Liberty is an attempt to save TikTok in America which is initiated by Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary and Frank McCourt. They are offering an ROI of $20 billion to the company but there are geopolitical issues involved.
The app is supposed to go dark on January 19, 2025, at 11:59 PM. However, some users have claimed that their application has already stopped working in the States and when they open it, it runs a message that claims:
"Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!"
Kevin and Frank have named their initiative "Liberty" as they want the app to become a beacon of "freedom of speech." Talking about the same, Shark Tank's Kevin said:
"Why not create the world's largest television network that's based on freedom of speech and democracy. Who doesn't wanna do that? That's really what Frank and I are doing here with Project Liberty. We got a big plan here. And it starts with saving TikTok but we don't stop there. We grow this much bigger and we think we can. It's a fantastic idea but it solves the basic problem."
The biggest reason why TikTok is leaving America is because of concerns about data. The government thinks that American data is being leaked globally through TikTok. By creating a safe space for users, Shark Tank's Kevin thinks they can solve this problem. He explained:
"We failed users in America with all social media. They don't trust where their date goes. I don't care, not just TikTok, all of them. They are always wondering, where's my data? Who's got control of my data? Well, we're gonna solve that."
Shark Tank season 16 airs on ABC on Fridays at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
