Who knew an animated Latvian movie about Cats would win a Golden Globe one day? But director Gints Zilbalodis and his small team of young and passionate individuals have created history with their animated movie Flow, which won the Best Animated Film award at the 82nd Golden Globes held last night.
This win is huge for the Latvian film, which was distributed by Janus Films and Sideshow, because it beat the pioneers in animation, Disney and Pixar, to emerge triumphant and win the award for Best Animated Movie.
Rendered solely on free and open-source software Blender and without dialogue, Flow is also the first Latvian movie selected for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
In addition to a Golden Globe, the movie has also bagged European Film Awards, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, and the National Board of Review Awards, all for Best Animated Movie.
Here is how director Gints Zilbalodis accepted the award for his film Flow.
Director Gints Zilbalodis thanked his team at the Golden Globes
Flow won the best-animated movie award, and this win was truly monumental for the whole team because they had no big production company or high-tech technology backing them up.
Director Zilbalodis accepted the Golden Globe and dedicated it to his whole team that worked on this small-budget movie and made it this big in stature,
“This film is made by a very small, young but passionate team in a place where there isn’t a big film industry. This is the first time that a film from Latvia has been here, so this is huge for us.”
The movie bagged this award after beating Pixar's Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing film of all time, in the animation category. In addition, Flow also beat highly successful movies like Moana 2, Wallace and Gromit, The Wild Robot, and Memoir of a Snail.
This Latvian film opened at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and will be available to rent and buy digitally this week. This is the perfect time to watch and see what all the hype is about.
What is the Golden Globe winner movie Flow about?
The movie's premise is simple, but the film's protagonist, a solitary black cat, has the power to attract a large audience, as is clear from its win last night. It seems like director Zilbalodis captured everybody's weak spot (cat videos), which he discussed with Axios at the Golden Globe red carpet,
"We looked at cat and dog videos. We wanted them to behave like animals, they don't speak, they don't tell jokes... I think animals are so funny and interesting, we don't need to change them,"
The movie follows a black cat who lives in solitary but has to change its lifestyle when their house is devastated by a flood. It must overcome its fear of water and learn to survive with other animal species, including some of its enemies.
Much like Flow, Zilbalodis spoke about how the movie is similar to his experience of making it,in his acceptance speech at the Golden Globe,
“This is a very personal story for me, because I used to work alone. I made all my films myself but this time I worked with a team and just like the cat in Flow, I had to learn how to trust others, how to collaborate, how to overcome our differences and I think its very important to remember this nowadays, more than ever.”
