Tensions are rising aboard motor yacht Katina on Below Deck Down Under as head chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph opens up to Captain Jason Chambers about struggles with her new sous chef, Anthony Bird.
In Episode 2 of Below Deck Down Under Season 3, Tzarina confided in the captain about the challenging dynamic in the galley, stating:
"I'm seeing this as like a trial period. It's just trying to find my rhythm around the galley."
What started as Captain Jason's attempt to provide additional support in the kitchen has evolved into a complex situation during the yacht's first charter in the Seychelles. The reality show, which follows the crew of a luxury superyacht, has captured growing friction between the two chefs, despite their initial collaboration tackling weevils and maggots in the season premiere.
Below Deck Down Under’s Captain Jason’s views on the rising tensions
Having worked with Tzarina previously, Captain Jason offered unique insights into the situation.
"She builds her own hurdles. There's little bits where she stumbles," he revealed in his confessional.
Adding:
"That's why she's got a sous chef."
The captain maintains a balanced view of the situation, acknowledging Tzarina's autonomy while emphasizing his expectations. "It's her domain. It's her department. She can manage it the way she wants," he explained.
"But I want our service to not have one hitch. I want it to be absolutely five-star. I want no excuses."
The relationship between the chefs became particularly strained during the "Cowboys and Cowgirls" themed dinner. Anthony criticized Tzarina's approach, suggesting to the camera,
"Just because the theme's basic doesn't mean the food has to be basic. If it was my menu, I would have been out there with the barbecue making it more of an immersive experience."
Anthony's dissatisfaction extended beyond the kitchen as he shared his concerns with deckhand Harry Van Vliet. "Yeah, if she just worked a bit cleaner, it would be nice," he complained.
"It's just like a mess everywhere. Dirty. Just not how I work."
The situation came to a head during the crew's first night out when Tzarina learned about Anthony's comments from Harry. When told that Anthony complained about cleaning up after her, Tzarina responded firmly:
"He should. He's my sous chef."
Tzarina's frustration became evident in her confessional:
"First charter, I'm already letting him do guest food because he's complaining, so I have to f—king suck up to him... if you don't want to wash up then go get a f—king head chef job. He has one job to do and that's to have my back, and instead he's talking s—t about me to the other crew members? It's just so disrespectful."
What’s next for Anthony and Tzarina on Below Deck Down Under?
The mounting tension suggests more drama to come in the galley. When chief stewardess Lara Rigby asked Anthony if he wanted a chance to showcase his abilities, his response hinted at future conflicts:
"[Tzarina would] be missing out on an opportunity if she didn't [let me]."
With Captain Jason watching closely and both chefs standing their ground, the dynamic in the galley promises to be a central storyline as Below Deck Down Under's third season continues to unfold. The question remains whether Tzarina and Anthony can find a working relationship that satisfies both their professional standards and the captain's expectations for five-star service.
