After receiving initial critic reviews, The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 has already achieved a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating before its premiere. It is the highest rating of any season on the show. Even the very first season, which was so massively popular, received a rating of 94%.
The series, developed by Bruce Miller and based on Margaret Atwood's book, has received praise from critics upon its premiere in 2017. The Handmaid's Tale season 6 will return, and its comeback will be on April 8 on Hulu.
What is The Handmaid's Tale about?
The Handmaid's Tale is a television drama series that is set in a future in which a totalitarian regime takes over part of the United States and removes women's rights. It was first shown in 2017 on Hulu and is adapted from a novel by Margaret Atwood, who wrote it in 1985.
The series follows the story of June Osborne, who is coerced into being a "Handmaid," a woman forced to give birth to children on behalf of powerful families. June is part of an increasingly strong resistance against those in power throughout the course of the series.
The show touched on big themes like control, rebellion, living, and the role of women in society. It extended the story of the book by bringing in new characters and scenarios. The show has won many awards, including 15 Primetime Emmys. Critics have universally loved it, though the audience ratings have been mixed. The average audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 57%.
How is The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 faring?
Ahead of its release, Season 6 boasts a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, courtesy of 11 critic reviews. That is all positive reviews. Critics have opined that the new season looks wonderful and addresses its themes satisfactorily. Some also wrote that this season features some of the best character development throughout the entire series.
Jeff Ewing from Collider says,
"With Season 6, The Handmaid's Tale is a masterclass in how to end a sharp, politically imperative show in times of moral crisis."
Lauren Thoman from TheWrap says,
"This final season is eminently bingeable, and each episode is tightly paced, with at least a few standout dramatic moments in each."
Emily Zemler from Observer stated,
"The Handmaid’s Tale’s last act may be more of a cliffhanger than a conclusion. But it can still give us hope and recognition, an artistic mirror of our own modern history that has only become more prescient since Atwood conceptualized it."
But these reviews are based only on the first eight of the ten episodes. Possibly more reviews will appear in the future, and the score may shift. Other critics also added that this season doesn't complete the story.
Rather, it does things for the next series, such as The Testaments. That's a new series that's in the works, and we'll see what comes next in The Handmaid's Tale with the continuation of characters such as Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy.
Season 6 has already scored a spotless 100% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The program is being acclaimed yet again for its rich characters and significant themes. Although it doesn't provide solutions to all questions, it leaves the door open for further stories in this world, beginning with The Testaments.
Through the years, The Handmaid's Tale has prompted discourse on real-world concerns, and its impact will probably go beyond even after its last episode is shown.
