FBI: International Season 4 Episode 11 recap: How is Smitty linked to the case?
Smitty has a personal history with Blackmore University. She was a student there but got expelled after alcohol was found in her room, which was against the school’s rules. However, during the Emma Byers investigation, Smitty finds out she was framed years ago.
She had reported a student for stealing, and that student’s father, a powerful man on the school’s board, set her up as payback. This brings back painful memories for Smitty but also makes her more determined to uncover the truth.
She knows a lot about the school, especially the Covington Club, of which Emma is revealed to be a part. The secret elitist group can only be joined after a brutal ritual. Smitty tells the Fly Team that the club did not allow women till 2013, and she fought against this sexism during her time at the school.
As she talks to old classmates and club members, she learns that the club keeps blackmailing students even after they graduate as it possesses information about them that can destroy their reputation.
FBI: International Season 4 Episode 11 recap: Who killed Emma?
As the team digs deeper into the case, they realize Emma did not join the Covington Club for the connections. Instead, she had been assaulted at the campus earlier and had reported it to the authorities, who did not do anything.
Emma did not know who the rapist was and joined the Covington Club to find him and expose him. The case is finally cracked when the team learns that James Haylett, a rich student with powerful parents, had made unwanted advances toward Emma.
When she rejected him, he bragged that he had already assaulted her. Witnesses reveal Emma confronted James the night she died and called him a rapist. This led to a fight between the two and James killed her. While the team gears up to arrest James, he flees on a private jet to Russia.
The team tricks the jet's pilot into landing in Germany by faking an air traffic control alert about a serious threat, and James is ultimately arrested. He is sent back to the UK to face murder charges.
Meanwhile, the university also goes through an overhaul as the chancellor is fired and the Covington Club is shut down for good. Smitty can seek justice for Emma and also find peace with her own past.
