Samantha Jones will not appear in And Just Like That Season 3. Fans of the original series, Sex and the City, had longed for an appearance by Kim Cattrall's character after seeing her once again in the finale of Season 2.

However, Cattrall recently put all that speculation to rest by announcing she won't be doing the new season of And Just Like That. Speaking of rumors, this follows reports of behind-the-scenes disagreements between Cattrall and the show's producers that played into her refusal to participate in the Max reboot.

Kim Cattrall had the role of Samantha Jones in Sex and the City from 1998 to 2004, and the two movies. Her one-liners and fearlessness made this actress a fan favorite. However, Cattrall has been rather vocal about how she needs to move on from Sex and the City, and And Just Like That.

Kim Cattrall addresses rumors on social media

After reports about the comeback of Samantha Jones, a confirmatory message was heard as a series of alleged reports surfaced that Cattrall was discussing a deal for And Just Like That Season 3.

Life & Style claimed in October 2024 that Cattrall would make a full-fledged return of the heroines, and social media erupted upon the excitement. But those rumors were quickly quashed by Kim Cattrall on X (formerly Twitter).

She was reacting to a fan posting:

“It looks like #KimCattrall (aka Samantha Jones) will be back for ‘And Just Like That…’ Season 3 after all!”

She replied,

“Aw that’s so kind but I’m not.”

This blunt confirmation puts hope of her character playing a great role in the upcoming season to rest. Cattrall's choice now seems final and marries well with her previous statements where she confessed not wanting to return to the show with Parker, Davis, and Cynthia Nixon.

Speaking of creative differences that led to her absence from the reboot's first two seasons, Cattrall shared some insight in an earlier interview with Variety. Even though the cameo appearance she made in season 2's finale endeared her to everyone, it seems that that might be the last fans see of the character in the Sex and the City universe.

Why Kim Cattrall won’t return for And Just Like That Season 3

Kim Cattrall has been frank about why she didn't return for And Just Like That. Although she appears in season 2 as a guest star, Cattrall revealed the conditions she had to meet before accepting a cameo appearance.

In an episode of The View, for instance, she mentioned that one of her big demands was to have Pat Field, Sex and the City's legendary costume designer, on her set.

She said,

“If I’m going to come back, I’ve got to come back with that Samantha style.”

However, Field was engaged with production work for Emily in Paris, so former assistants handled the scenes. Cattrall's one-day filming guest appearance also added to the tension that already simmered between her and the producers.

Nobody can deny the tensions that exist in the Sex and the City cast, particularly with Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker. In several interviews, Cattrall has declared her urge to leave the franchise forever, so it is quite unlikely for her to return to And Just Like That.

The absence of Samantha in the story leaves a huge void in the hearts and minds of the fans mainly because Samantha was an integral and crucial element in the dynamics of the original series.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King said that he was grateful for the fallout from Samantha's departure but, on the same note, he has said that And Just Like That will keep rolling with new storylines.

The future of And Just Like That sans Samatha

Fans are left to wonder what's in store for the rest of the cast, as production for And Just Like That Season 3 ramps up. No Samantha Jones does mean the other main characters will be the center of attention for what Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) get up to.

Sarah Jessica Parker hinted that "layers and complexity" may be done for the next season that perhaps Carrie would discover a new set of love lives plus personal challenges. Officially, season 3 filmed production in May 2024, and Max confirmed that the show will come back in 2025.

Among other familiar faces in Parker, Nixon, and Davis are some new additions to Season 3 from Rosie O'Donnell, Mehcad Brooks, and Logan Marshall-Green. Introducing such new characters raises a lot of expectations that maybe the writers were trying hard to rejuvenate their energy in the show, which was largely mixed reception in its first two seasons.

And Just Like That fans hope for another season as bashing and dramatic-romantic, which brought Sex and the City to its heady, pop culture status. However, they have to get used to the fact that Samantha Jones is not returning.
