Fans of Heartstopper Season 3, which premiered on October 3, 2024, were excited and anxious to see how the emotional journey for Nick and Charlie would continue.
The question going into this new season was if Charlie (played by Joe Locke) would ever make it through the struggles he has had to go through since the first season while fighting bouts of mental health issues.
This series, based on Alice Oseman's popular graphic novels, covered some sensitive topics, such as self-harm and eating disorders in previous seasons, so people have become pretty anxious about Charlie's fate. Now, let's answer the burning question: No, Charlie does not die in Heartstopper Season 3.
His storyline exhibits mental health problems he has faced, and how these take a toll both on his personal life and relationship with Nick. Towards the last episodes of the season, Charlie's journey leaves fans hopeful yet sad for his future.
Charlie's mental health journey in Heartstopper Season 3
The show starts to focus on Charlie's deepening mental health issues that have been evident since Season 2. Many episodes of Season 3 focus on Charlie and Nick's struggle in their relationship amidst the complexities of growing up, including Charlie's battle within his mind.
This is where things get harder; Charlie gets diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and OCD when he's in for an in-patient treatment. This was tough to watch, but brought out the rest of Charlie's character as he embraced these problems head-on.
In an interview with TODAY on October 3, 2024, Joe Locke explained the care and research that went into the portrayal of Charlie's mental health struggles.
"I wanted to make sure that we portrayed anorexia and OCD authentically, without leaning into harmful stereotypes," Locke said.
Locke's performance has been seen as sensitive and with the intention that it does not belittle audiences and make them witness the struggle, or make light of them.
But, above all else, the drama also deals with how these problems affect Charlie's relationship with Nick (Kit Connor), who grows anxious over Charlie. The season does not hold back on tough conversations.
For example, in the Heartstopper Season 3 trailer, Nick says,
"I'm really worried about you."
This element forms much of the season's emotional beats. While his diagnosis presents that turning point, the series would seem to be less about his tragic end and instead more about him being restored or healed while hammering home the theme of support, therapy, and self-care.
Heartstopper: Nick and Charlie's relationship gets tested
The love story in Heartstopper is between Nick and Charlie, which takes the heart of the series; it's tested in new ways in Season 3. Both of those characters have to deal with the pressure put upon them by Charlie's mental health, and the series shows how to work through those issues.
On the role of Nick on Heartstopper, Kit Connor, on October 4, 2024, spoke to Netflix Tudum on the transition he experienced:
"This season is about growing up, but also about learning to take care of each other without losing yourself."
In the latter half of the season, when Charlie is on his road towards recovery, Nick himself has problems of their own: which university he should attend. This external pressure draws them even further because Nick thinks about long-distance and how it would affect them in the future.
By Heartstopper Season 3 Episode 8, titled 'Apart,' Nick and Charlie, love in bloom, have never been more together. But they are now ready to face the harsh realities of adult life.
The most memorable scene of the finale is when Nick hurries back from visiting a university at the right time to watch Charlie play with his band at a summer festival. It's like a metaphor for their relationship: life may pull them somewhere else, but they always find ways of coming back to each other.
As Alice Oseman said to Tudum,
"It ends in such a joyful, beautiful place for both of them. Charlie finally has such confidence, security, and safety in himself."
What happens to Nick and Charlie on Heartstopper Season 4?
As of now, Heartstopper has been neither renewed nor canceled for season 4. The story of Nick and Charlie is in store. All that it could ever talk about as an adaptation, has already been done since the series covered plots till Volume 5 of Oseman's graphic novels. As of now, Volume 6 is in process.
According to Oseman, in an interview with The Guardian in September 2024, she hinted that the final book is going to be something of a little "epilogue" about the highs and the lows of life and love outside the school.
Nick and Charlie aren't over. If Heartstopper were to be revived, the finale season would take up the narrative from Oseman's novella Nick and Charlie, as Nick starts university and their relationship becomes more complicated due to distance.
Meanwhile, as fans bask in all the emotional ups and downs that Heartstopper Season 3 has offered, hope and resilience shine through for Charlie and Nick as they begin life together.
All three seasons of Heartstopper are available on Netflix.
