Erik and Lyle Menendez, in 1989, at the ages of 18 and 21, respectively, gunned down their parents in the living room of their Beverley Hills home. Their parents, Jose Menendez and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez, were murdered while eating ice cream and watching television in their home.

After the murder, Erik and Lyle Menendez called 911 to report their parents had been shot. Both brothers had bought tickets to a movie and a festival to prove they had an alibi.

While the police initially did not suspect them, their extravagant spending on luxury items and travel raised suspicion. The police soon got hold of a confession tape through Judalon Smyth, who was having an affair with Erik and Lyle Menendez's therapist.

Growing up, the brothers led a financially comfortable life, but no one knew what happened within the family behind closed doors. The brothers had two trials. In both trials, they were accused of killing their parents and inheriting their wealth as a motive.

On the contrary, Erik and Lyle claimed that they murdered their parents as they feared for their life. Both brothers, along with witnesses, claimed that their father s*xually, physically, and mentally abused them, and their mother did nothing to stop their father.

At the end of both trials, both brothers were found guilty of two counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. They were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Their case is known as many find themselves wondering if the brothers were heartless murderers or victims who had no other way out.

Kathy Griffin has also flaunted the portrait before by showing it to her neighbor, Kim Kardashian, on Snapchat. Kim Kardashian took to her Snapchat story to share a video of Kathy Griffin showing the painting. While zooming in on Erik Menendez's signature on the artwork, Kardashian also referred to the painting as,

"The Menendez Special, look who painted this for her"

To which Kathy Griffin replied,

"From prison, yeah"

Previously, Kathy Griffin has also talked about the painting on Larry King Live. When asked how she reacted upon receiving the painting, the comedian stated,

"As a comedian, it's heaven for me. I mean, when I saw that painting come, I thought, OK, this is a nice painting. What the heck am I going to do with the painting of myself, that's weird. And then when I looked down and saw Erik Menendez, I thought this has to be framed."
