Fallout revolves around Lucy (played by Ella Purnell) navigating the aftermath of the world's end after stepping out from The Vault. As Lucy explores the outside world she comes across 'The Ghoul' - formerly Cooper Howard (played by Walton Goggins).
The duo initially gets into nasty altercations with each other and battles alien-like creatures on the way, but quickly grows closer and operates together. Speaking to The Wrap on August 20, 2024, Goggins shared his thoughts on his and Lucy's on-screen relationship in Fallout.
The actor describes how Lucy perceives him, claiming he's just a delivery person for her. Furthermore, he emphasizes giving Lucy a rude awakening about the current world and its reality. He explained in an interview with TheWrap,
"In some ways, The Ghoul to Lucy is just the person who delivers her on the other side of the Rubicon, the person who just bursts her bubble."
What is the relationship between The Ghoul and Lucy MacLean?
Speaking about their relationship, Goggins claimed that Purnell's character has made a positive impact on The Ghoul. Since she came along, he has regained a fraction of his humanity. Speaking to TheWrap on this matter Goggins comments,
"It's a three-dimensional relationship, and I really don't know where it's going to go, but I have my own ideas about where I hope it goes."
Additionally, Goggins gave viewers a potential teaser about their relationship for an alleged new season saying,
"Lucy and The Ghoul are - I don't know if they're a team - but I think they're beginning to understand each other and whenver anyone sets out to define the truth, it's never going to be easy, is it?"
As Goggins mentioned, the duo is gradually learning about the other while navigating life after the end of the world. Although there appear to be a few moments between them, their relationship status currently might translate to frenemies.
Although they don't necessarily get along, they actively look out for each other in times of danger.
Why did Ella Purnell's Lucy leave The Vault?
Ella Purnell's Lucy from Fallout belongs to Vault 33 situated in Los Angeles. However, after learning about her father Hank MacLean being in danger, Lucy decides to embark on a dangerous journey in 2296 to find him.
Hence, she leaves the Vault to find her father and save him from the show's antagonist, Lee Moldaver. It's on this same quest that she encounters The Ghoul who agrees to reluctantly help her find her father.
How did Cooper become The Ghoul?
The Ghoul formerly known as 'Cooper Howard' was a family man who worked as a promoter and tech person for The Vault. After an emergency drill to enter the vault was announced, Cooper rushed to his family who were already en route to the nearest Vault.
Unfortunately, he couldn't make it to them in time, resulting in him being exposed to the radiation of the nuclear bombs in Los Angeles. The exposure resulted in his 'ghoulish' appearance, hence the name.
