While Yellowstone and 1923 concluded in 2024 and 2025, respectively, fans of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-western drama have no reason to be disappointed because the spin-offs of the Yellowstone verse have already been officially confirmed, which means the story of the Duttons will continue.
However, because of the spin-offs and prequel shows that Yellowstone has, one might get confused after a point regarding the ownership of the Dutton ranch. Starting from 1883, the ranch has passed through various hands, and keeping track of all who owned it until 2024 might be a task, even for the most dedicated fans.
To make things easier and more streamlined for Yellowstone viewers, here is a complete list of people who have been associated with the Dutton ranch, starting in 1883.
List of all the people who have owned the Dutton ranch in Yellowstone
The Dutton ranch was founded in 1883
Originally owned by the indigenous people, James Dutton bought the land in Montana from Thomas Rainwater’s ancestors after burying Elsa Dutton there. This was the beginning of the establishment of the Dutton ranch, which would reach massive heights and would see fights over its ownership.
Initially, James and Margaret Dutton started building the ranch slowly by gathering resources. Besides their only surviving child, John, the couple later welcomed another son, Spencer.
Jacob Dutton comes to the scene in 1893
The winter of 1893 proved to be rather harsh for the Duttons, and unfortunately, John Dutton passed away while trying to save his family from horse thieves. This made his wife, Margaret Dutton, write a letter to John’s brother Jacob and ask him to come and save them.
When Jacob and his wife, Cara, arrive at the Dutton ranch, they find that John and Spencer are barely managing as their mother has committed suicide. This marks the beginning of another chapter of ownership of the Dutton ranch as Jacob takes the lead.
Spencer Dutton gets the ownership of the Dutton ranch in 1924
After Jacob and Cara died at some point in 1924, the ranch went into the hands of Spencer, the only surviving member of the Dutton clan. John had passed away in the fight with Whitfield, and since his wife and child were also dead, Spencer became the logical inheritor of the ranch.
It is unclear when Spencer owned and ran the ranch, however, we might get to see more of this in the spin-off, 1944. While managing the ranch, Spencer also brought up his son, John Dutton II, who will inherit the ownership.
John Dutton II's son, born in 1956, is Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III, the central character of Yellowstone, who took over the ranch sometime before 2018.
John Dutton III takes over the ranch in Yellowstone
John Dutton III’s ownership of the Dutton ranch has been detailed in Yellowstone as he is the central character of the show. Yellowstone also shed light on the death of John II, who had died of cancer, and after his passing away, the ranch came under the ownership of John Dutton III.
As promised to his father, John Dutton III has worked all his life to ensure that the ownership of the ranch never goes away from the Duttons. He marries and builds a family of his own, and his children are also involved in the daily operations of the ranch.
The Dutton ranch is sold to Thomas Rainwater by Kayce and Beth Dutton in 2023
After John Dutton III became the Governor of Montana in 2022, after a brief stint in the office, he was murdered. Since his own child Jamie Dutton had a role to play in the murder, he got disowned by his family, and the two remaining Dutton siblings, Kayce and Beth, decided to sell the ranch to Thomas Rainwater.
This move not only took the ranch back to the ones it belonged to before the Duttons had set foot on Montana, but it also ensured that it was protected by law and no one would be able to touch it in the name of development.
Kayce, along with his family, holds on to the east camp, a small part of the ranch, and they start a cattle operation of their own. Beth and her husband Rip move on to a totally different ranch and start a new life.
Yellowstone can be streamed on Peacock.
