Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1 premiered on November 13, 2022. After almost 2 years, the second part will air on November 10, 2024, on Paramount Network (and on CBS for the first episode).

Debuting in 2018, Yellowstone is a modern take on the traditional cowboy genre/ Western narratives. The series focuses on the insane and often violent border dispute in the state of Montana between the Dutton family and a Native American reservation.

The Duttons are a group of encroaching land developers and as the series gradually progresses, they try to take hold over the political arena of the state as well.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, who has acted in shows like Sons of Anarchy and Veronica Mars, the Yellowstone cast includes Kevin Costner, Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes, and Kelly Reilly to name a few.

A recap of the story before the release of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2

John Dutton was elected as the Governor of Montana

Season 5 premiere of Yellowstone saw John Dutton being elected as the governor of Montana after being in a lifelong feud with the authorities. The season 4 ending made it evident that the Duttons would soon be taking over the government.

Once elected, Dutton made it clear that he would be protecting the land of Montana from any kind of outside forces, and that made him aligned with the views of Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), the local Native American reservation leader and Dutton’s series-long rival.

John being elected put the government employees in trouble as he had no desire to follow the strict rules of the government house. He also mentioned that he will never support any plan or program that leads to environmental damage.

John also helped environmental activist and his former fling Summer Higgins (Piper Perabo), to get out of prison and reduce her sentence to only house arrest. Summer and Beth had fought all season long and eventually found a way to respectively share their space.

Monica suffers a miscarriage

While Monica and Kayce enjoy a happy marital life, tragedy strikes them when their unborn child dies in Monica’s womb. The unfortunate incident happened when a heavily pregnant Monica tried to drive herself to the hospital with her son, Tate.

Unfortunately, in a state of extreme labor, Monica finds it difficult to drive properly and the road she was driving on was also not in great condition. This leads to an accident, in which Monica and Tate survive but the unborn baby does not.

The miscarriage naturally breaks Monica but the couple stays strong, both individually and together. John stands as a huge support to Monica during this difficult period, sharing his own tragic story of losing his baby brother years before.

Beth and Rip’s family life evolves

Beth and Rip, the central couple of Yellowstone, got married in the finale of season 4 and created their blissful marital life. While Rip does not know the exact reason behind Beth’s inability to get pregnant, he knows that she will never be able to carry a child.

The couple take in teen runaway Carter as their own child and while Rip is not very keen at the idea of taking Carter in, the boy eventually grows on him. Since Kyce is clearly uninterested in taking over the ranch and is rather enjoying his life as a livestock officer, Beth and Rip become the heirs of the ranch.

The couple is indeed better suited for taking over the ranch than anyone else in the family since the ranch is their first priority. Beth also turned her back on her family by selling her share in the Schwartz & Meyer fund.

Jamie makes a return from being controlled by Beth to fuelling their rivalry

Beth’s selling her controlling interest from the Schwartz & Meyer fund under the condition of her keeping the real estate in their possession created a huge roadblock that Market Equities could not work around.

After she made the deal, Beth got arrested because of breaking a glass on a lady’s head after she tried to flirt with Rip in front of her. On the other hand, Sarah Atwood, a lawyer, got involved with Jamie so that she could find her way inside a family that she could manipulate.

Their relationship continued throughout the season and is very likely to continue in the next one as well. Sarah has become Jamie’s biggest ally and supporter in his mission to take his father down.

Coming out of Beth’s controlling thumb, Jamie declares war on his adopted father and sister by starting an impeachment inquiry against John through his office as his attorney general.

The reason he showed behind this impeachment was that John was abusing his office and power for personal gain. In his announcement, he said that his father had wrongfully reserved land and blocked an airport construction that would be beneficial for the state.

Season 5 part 1 ends with Beth and John agreeing on the fact that something needs to be done about Jamie. It remains to be seen who will be making it alive out of the last part of the season.

Since Kevin Costner will be absent in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, the chances of his character being killed by Jamie before he and Beth manage to kill him is a logical possibility.

Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1 can be streamed on Hulu.
