Each episode of Dark Matter took fans and viewers to different and astonishing realities. The sci-fi TV series revolves around Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton) who is kidnapped and transported to an alternate reality of his life.
Little did the physics professor know that alternate realities and parallel worlds would turn his life upside down.
In his quest to return to his wife Daniela (played by Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie Dessen (played by Oakes Fegley), he travels through multiple timelines and encounters several versions of himself.
The original Jason is titled Jason 1A because his life in the real world is taken over by one of his variants Jason 2. By the end, there are seven versions of Jason in Dark Matter, differentiated by characteristics and story arcs.
Throughout the episodes of Dark Matter, Jason 1A encounters his variants, while trying to return to his original life. In this article, we will explore every Jason who appeared in the TV series episode 8, and how Jason 1A succeeded in his mission.
A chronological list of the Jason variants that have appeared in Dark Matter so far
1) Jason 1A (the original Jason Dessen)
Jason 1A is whom viewers saw from the beginning, a kind physics professor who cannot survive without his family. He's kidnapped from the original universe and thrown into a box, which will further create variants and complicate Jason 1A's life in a different reality.
Since Jason 1A is in a different reality, his life in the original universe is now taken over by Jason 2. He then meets several other variants of him and decides to discover a way back to his original family.
2) Jason 2
Unlike Jason 1A, Jason 2 isn't dedicated to his family, leaving Daniela suspicious of him. He's more desperate to survive than to take care of his family.
Jason 2's personality is entirely different from Jason 1A, no wonder he comes from another reality. In Dark Matter episode 8, he's seen taking Charlie on a tour of the University of Chicago, where another Jason filled with fury charges at Jason 2.
3) Jason 1B
In Dark Matter episode 8, Jason 1B isn't seen much as he's eliminated by Jason 2 at the beginning of the episode. The reason why Jason 2 killed Jason 1B might be Jason 2's fear of being threatened by any variant of Jason.
So, before anybody on Dark Matter knows the truth, he successfully manages to kill Jason 1B.
4) Jason 1C
You can identify Jason 1C through a scar above his forehead, which is missing on Jason 1A's (original Jason) body. In episode eight, Jason 1 C encounters Jason 1A at a bar and explains to him that each time Jason goes to the box, it creates a new variant.
This has caused many Jason variants, complicating Jason 1A's quest to return to the original reality. Jason 1C revealed that he went through traumatic experiences in a "very dark world" where he lost Amanda (played by Alice Braga).
He also suggests a plan to Jason 1A to take down Jason 2 and stop him from hurting other variants. But the exact details of his plan seem unclear, and he finally leaves Jason 1A alone at the bar.
5) Jason 1D
Jason 1D is a bit terrifying and a haunting variant as you can see burn marks covering half of his face. Jason 1D is the variant who attacked Jason 2 while he was walking Charlie to the University of Chicago.
Jason 1D's arrival in Jason 2's reality ( the real world of Jason 1A) becomes troublesome for Jason 2 as he's facing a tough variant whom he cannot kill easily.
Jason 1D then follows Jason 2 to the library, and they finally get into a conflict on Dark Matter. However, Jason 2 succeeds in knocking out Jason 1D and moves away after leaving him unconscious in the bathroom.
6) Jason 1E
Yes, there are more Jason variants than you must have expected, one of them is Jason 1E, who arrived at the end of episode eight of Dark Matter. Jason 1E tried to pick up Daniela and Charlie in a car and explained to them the ongoing situation with Jason's variants.
He claims to be the original Jason who was abducted and sent to a different world. but his explanation further complicates the situation as Charlie and Daniela are puzzled more than ever.
However, Daniela realized that Jason 1E wasn't the Jason Dessen she had been searching for but was facing a tough time identifying who might be the original Jason after encountering his other variants.
7) Jason 1F
Though Jason 1F didn't appear in episode eight for a long time, his arrival played the biggest part in reflecting the chaos caused by Jason's variants existing in the same reality.
He appears when Jason 1E is driving the car while trying to convince Daniela and Charlie, and their car crashes. This leads Daniela and Charlie into great trouble as the two cannot identify the original Jason.
With each encounter, it became difficult for Charlie and Daniela to distinguish between the variants and the original Jason Dessen.
How did Jason 1A go back to the original world of Dark Matter?
Now that Daniela and Charlie encountered several variants of Jason in the eighth episode, it was finally time for them to meet the original Jason Dessen or Jason 1A. At the beginning of the episode, Jason 1A crafted a plan to get arrested on purpose.
He does this by smoking a cigar in a diner, after which the police take him with them. Jason 1A did this only to meet Daniela at the police station and explain how these variants emerged.
Following his arrest, Daniela gets a call, and Jason 1A tries to convince her. Despite being suspicious, Daniela agrees to meet Jason A at the Bean. Since there were variants all around, desperate to reunite with Daniela and Charlie, they agreed on a safe word "Jupiter".
After escaping Jason 2 and Jason 1E, Daniela reaches the Bean and hears the safe word from Jason 1A. Though he's believed to be the original Jason Dessen, Daniela was still suspicious.
