Here is what happened in the season 1 finale of Etoile

Etoile explores the world of ballet dancers and academies. The finale opens with Tobias, an American choreographer with a distinctive and unconventional style, getting backlash and bad reviews after the first show. He further slips into a depressive state and isolates himself after obsessing over negative comments. Gabin is his close companion and collaborator. Amidst all his meltdowns, Tobias is unable to support Gabin emotionally, which affects their relationship.
Tobias is someone who is a perfectionist, making others work with him. Nicholas, the long-time Artistic Director of the Metropolitan Ballet, is ageing and unwell, suffering multiple health scares that signal it's time for succession planning. While Jack, his close friend, is afraid of losing him. When Nicholas falls into a coma, Jack finally panics and rushes into a decision, and offers the Artistic Director job to Cheyenne without discussing it with Geneviève, his partner.
Cheyenne was initially unsure if she wanted to take it, but eventually she surprised everyone by taking the role. Genevieve sees Jack's action as a breach of trust. But that is when another twist happened, and when Cheyenne started to embrace her job, Nicholas came out of the Coma. Cheyenne always admired Nicholas and believed that she could carry his legacy forward, but is now experiencing an absurd feeling about the whole situation.
How did the season 1 finale of Etoile end?
The season 1 ending sets up perfectly for the new season. The story suggested several times that Jack and Cheyenne might end up together, and by the end of season 1, they are shown kissing each other in the rehearsal room.
Jack says to Cheyenne that it was a bad idea 5 years ago, to which Cheyenne responds swiftly, "It is an even worse idea now". The lines suggest that they shared a romantic past, and the spark is still on. The scene sets up for the characters to share a relationship in the future episode while also depicting what exactly happened between the two 5 years ago.
Gael and Cheyenne shared some closeness, while Jack never liked Gael. Initially, it seemed inappropriate, which now makes sense as it must have stirred some unresolved feelings between the two.
