What happened in Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 17?

Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 17 titled Four Body Problems premiered on April 10, 2025, on CBS. The episode dealt with the case of a missing conspiracy theorist, Russell, from a renowned funeral home called Arthur Green and Sons funeral home. Upon investigation by Elsbeth and Officer Chandler, a deep dark mystery of the funeral home came to light.

The episode began with Russell investigating the funeral of a writer called N.D. Longacre. Russell, a conspiracy theorist and a YouTuber, believed that Longacre's death was a hoax. However, his innocent inquiry turned deadly for him. Russell's uncle and the owner of the funeral home, Arthur Green, took him to the nearby cemetery on the pretence of digging Longrace's grave. Arthur smashed his nephew's head, put him inside the coffin, and transported his body back to the funeral house.

Barb, Russell's friend, alerted the detectives about her missing friend and provided them with Russell's last location, the cemetery (tracked via a shared app). When Elsbeth began to investigate the case, she encountered several hindrances — her chatterbox partner, Officer Chandler, and resistance from Captain Wagner.

After investigating thoroughly and eliminating FBI involvement, Elsbeth became quite sure about Arthur Green's involvement in the case (via his inconsistent and contradictory statements).

Elsbeth found several pieces of evidence from the cemetery, including Russell's rolled cigarettes, tire tracks, and a high on weed witness, Jay — all pointed towards Arthur's involvement in Russell's missing case.

Meanwhile, Arthur was struggling to hide Russell's body amidst the arrival of three bodies from a helicopter crash. Arthur then tried to manipulate Juniper Dell (an eco-friendly burial for her sister) into cremating her sister's body. Upon finding some dirt in an empty coffin from the funeral house's showroom, Elsbeth was determined about Arthur's involvement. When Juniper asked Arthur to open the coffin, she found her sister's body and Russell's crammed together.

When Arthur was asked why he killed his nephew Russell, he revealed that long back, Raymond mistakenly cremated Longacre's body instead of his dog Polly. Thus, to save the legacy of the family and the funeral home, they buried an empty casket. Arthur feared Russell's investigation could ruin their business.

The episode ended with a late call from Captain Kershaw, who hinted at a trouble brewing for Wagner's investigation into Judge Crawford, setting up the premises for the next episode.
