Elsbeth investigates the missing case of Russell, a conspiracy theorist: Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 17
The episode kicks off at the Arthur Green and Sons Funeral Home, a prestigious establishment run by the suspicious owner, Arthur Green. However, things take a wild turn at the funeral house after Russell, a YouTuber and a conspiracy theorist and Arthur's nephew, goes missing. Previously, Russell inquired about the funeral of the mystery writer N.D. Longacre, as he believed the writer faked death. When Russell went missing, his friend Barb contacted the detectives.
Elsbeth and the chatterbox Officer Chandler took over the case. Barb informed them that, via a shared app, she tracked Russell's last location to a nearby cemetery. She insisted that Russell might have been tracked down and abducted by the FBI as per his latest cryptic social media post—DEF. Meanwhile, Elsbeth dug into Russell's claim that the mystery writer's funeral was a hoax. Elsbeth asked Captain Wagner to contact the FBI about Russell's case but couldn't find out any details about him. However, Elsbeth realized that the FBI did keep a check on the Russells (might be due to his popularity as a conspiracy theorist).
A witness, Jay, who was most probably high on weed, told Elsbeth that he saw Russell in the cemetery the night he went missing and described that he was abducted by a spaceship with silver and green lights.
Elsbeth interviewed Arthur when she went to the funeral home to investigate Russell's death. She found several inconsistencies in Arthur's statements, which proved that Arthur was trying to hide something. Even though Captain Wagner seemed skeptical about Arthur Green's involvement, Elsbeth was sure of it.
The plotline of the episode is highlighted through its layered mystery. Russell's disappearance isn't a simple missing case but one with twists and wrapped in an urge to protect the family legacy. Is Arthur Green a grieving uncle or a cold murderer? Can Elsbeth solve the case with the non-stop chatterbox Officer Slander and weird witnesses?
Elsbeth uncovers the dark secrets of Arthur Green and Sons Funeral Home: Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 17
As Elsbeth zeroes in on the funeral home, the arrival of three bodies of high-profile people disrupts Arthur's plans. Elsbeth takes advantage of the chaos and sorts out evidence, including tire tracks, Russell's hand-rolled cigarettes, and a tin foil that suggests Russell was in the cemetery with Arthur.
She sneaked into the funeral home's showroom and found dirt in an empty coffin, employing foul play. The case was finally solved when Juniper Dell, arranging for her sister's eco-friendly funeral, opted for cremation even after Arthur's pressure. Juniper asked the coffin to be opened, where they found Russell's body crammed with Juniper's sister's body, thus confirming Elsbeth's suspicion of Arthur Green.
The twist does not end here. In the final scene, Elsbeth learned that the Longacre mystery stemmed from a mistake by Raymond Green (Pop Pop). Years ago, Raymond accidentally cremated Longacre instead of his dog Polly; thus, he hid the secret by burying an empty casket. Arthur simply wanted to protect his family's legacy and business before his nephew Russell exposed it. Arthur took Russell into the cemetery, slammed his head with a shovel, and put him inside a coffin.
The episode ends with his Barb finding closure and Detective Kaya Blanke graduating from the tip-line duty. However, it's not over for Elsbeth and Wagner, as a call from Captain Kershaw hints at the 'upcoming trouble' in Judge Crawford's case.
