What happens when you expect the unexpected? If you thought Elle Wood's story ended with Legally Blonde 2 or were waiting for another season, Reese Witherspoon has a surprise for you instead. Legally Blonde's universe is expanding with its prequel series Elle.
Instead of taking the story forward, Reese Witherspoon plans to take viewers back in time, when Elle Woods was a teenager dreaming of getting into Havard. Produced by Witherspoon's media company, Hello Sunshine, Elle is written by Gossip Girls creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. Marc Platt, Legally Blonde producer, has also joined the spin-off team.

What is Elle all about?
The prequel series Elle will portray the high school years of Elle Woods, long before she became the fashionable yet fierce Havard law graduate. As per the official synopsis, the show will explore Elle's teenage experience, including her high school drama, heartbreaks, gossip, and some 90s fashion. As per Variety, the logline reads,
"Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film."
In an Instagram post of May 2024, Reese Witherspoon, in the iconic pink attire and heels, gave major hints of the upcoming spin-off Elle. The caption reads:
"Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Havard Law, she was a regular 90s high school girl. And all of you are going to get to know her, next year on Prime Video. I'M SO EXCITED"
When will Elle be released?
Though an exact date has not been revealed yet, Elle will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in 2025. In an interview with People Magazine, Witherspoon revealed that filming for the spin-off will begin in March 2025. She said,
"I'm really excited. We start in March."

What did Reese Witherspoon say about Elle's casting?
Speaking of the casting process for Elle, Reese Witherspoon has revealed that it is truly difficult to determine who would be suitable as a young Elle Woods and can ace the iconic pink attire.
In an interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her comedy film You're Cordially Invited, she gave an update about the spin-off show Elle. She revealed she was first inspired to explore the prequel series after watching Netflix's Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega. She stated that she loved it and how it inspired her to start the prequel series, Elle.
The Hello Sunshine producer said,
"And now I have to pick a girl to play the young me"
She also stated that she is currently going through the audition tapes of the girls who auditioned to play teen Elle Woods. The official cast list has not been announced yet.
In the interview with People Magazine, she also spoke about her chihuahua, Moonie, who played an important role in the movies. She said,
"The Chihuahua has passed. So I need a new support animal."
