Earth Abides Season 1 finale: Release date, time, and everything we know so far

Earth Abides has become one of the most popular shows on MGM+ within a month of its premiere. Based on George R. Stewart’s eponymous 1949 novel, the post-apocalyptic drama follows a world where a virus has wiped out the majority of the human population.

The few survivors who are left then endeavor to form a new civilization, while being led by geologist Ish. The first season of the show features only six episodes and is all set to air its finale on December 29, 2024.

Things are not looking good for Ish, as in the previous episode, his son Joey was seen fighting for his life. While Ish wishes to give up on his own life to save his son, Joey’s fate still hangs in the balance in the Earth Abides season 1 finale.

Earth Abides season 1 finale: Release date and time

Earth Abides season 1 episode 6 will be released on MGM+ on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 9 PM EST. Titled Forever is Tomorrow is Today, the episode will conclude the storyline of the first season. If you miss the 9 PM premiere of the episode, MGM+ will re-telecast it right after at 10 PM ET/PT.

Earth Abides season 1 finale: What to expect?

As the upcoming episode is the season finale, expect it to tie all the loose ends and give a satisfying conclusion to the plot. Meanwhile, the makers might add a twist in the ending to keep the doors open for future seasons.

In the sixth episode, the group will have to face some tough challenges as the virus continues to spread. Molly’s warning about the virus infecting people it missed before has already started to come true, which puts everyone in danger.

Meanwhile, Ish will continue to struggle with guilt and fear as Joey’s condition gets worse. At the same time, Joey’s secret project, a plane inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s designs, may bring some hope to the community.

Earth Abides: What happened in the previous episode?

In Earth Abides episode 5, The Return, the group celebrated finding drinkable water, but their happiness quickly faded. That night, Charlie assaulted Evie. Ish saw what happened and called a meeting with the community to figure out what to do next.

The community decided that Charlie needed to go, and Ish killed him with a hammer. After Charlie's death, his followers, including Kori and Perry, expressed regret for supporting him and wanted to join Ish’s group. However, Silas didn’t accept them and chose to leave.

He later returned after realizing he would not survive on his own, but Ish still rejected him because Silas had stood guard while Charlie assaulted Evie. The episode then jumped ahead three years and showed how everyone had moved on.

The virus started spreading once again, and Ish believed it was a punishment for killing Charlie. Meanwhile, Alex was focused on his own issues, upset that Ish did not seem to favor him. Heather then returned to San Lupo after realizing she had made a mistake by going against her parents' wishes.

Joey later caught the illness and his condition worsened over time. The episode ended with Ish heading to the hospital to find medicines and praying at Church to take his life instead of his son’s.
