MGM+'s Earth Abides is based on George R. Stewart's novel of the same name which follows a group of lone survivors and how they begin a new civilization after humanity is wiped off by a deadly virus, caused by a snake's bite.

Heading this group is geologist Ish, who must find a way to save humanity and become the protector of this new civilization. Earth Abides has crossed seventeen years in just 3 episodes, and the people are trying to live in their new normal after humanity is wiped.

Earth Abides last episode saw Ish losing his dog Lucky to a storm and ended with a cliffhanger when he saved Evie and her baby from a mountain lion, left alone at the animal's mercy in the final moments. Episode 4 & 5 is set to air on December 22, 2024.

More on Earth Abides Episode 5 in our story.

What is the release date for Eart Abides Season 1 Episode 5?

Earth Abides will air a two-episode double event for fans on MGM+ on December 22, 2024, at 9 pm ET. This means that Episode 4 will air at 9 pm, followed by Episode 5 just after.

The next two episodes will be power-packed as Ish, and the group will face a new nomadic group headed by a new entry, Charlie. He will supposedly have a solution for the water problem but will ask for something in return.

In addition, the stakes for the group will increase as the virus returns, taking Joey in its grip. Ish will have to face this double threat in Charlie and the virus in Earth Abides next episodes.

Actor Aaron Tveit will be introduced in Earth Abides Season 1 Episode 4. What to expect from future episodes?

As stated earlier, the show will air two episodes back-to-back, and fans can look forward to seeing both Episodes 4 and 5 in one sitting. Another thing to look forward to is actor Aaron Tveit, who is all set to debut in Earth Abides with Episode 4.

Unlike his other characters in Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Les Misérables, Tveit plays Charlie, a morally grey character on the show. As the show has already made a significant time jump of about seventeen years in the first three episodes of the show, where we saw Ish trying to survive after the deadly pandemic, fans will meet another group led by Tveit's Charlie.

Since everybody has different approaches in difficult times, such as a pandemic, Charlie represents the strata of people who believe in surviving, either by hook or crook. He will manipulate people to get what he wants and will also do morally ambiguous things to survive in the harsh world they are.

In an interview with Collider, when asked what animal would he attribute his character to on the show, he said Charlie is like a snake hidden in the grass. Nobody pays attention to it, but he is very dangerous. This allegory is also interesting because the pandemic on the show occurs because of a snake bite,

What I hoped to do was, for when the audience meets Charlie, it's at a moment where Ish is struggling and where the group of people is struggling with some water issues, some tactile things, and so, could Charlie be the answer to their problems?... Sure, he's maybe a little abrasive, but he gets it done, and he's a great leader.”

He added,

''He [Charlie] got by with his smarts and his charm, and probably was pulling petty crimes and stealing and manipulating people, and who knows what else, but nothing major. Then, of course, he's thrust into this situation where he realizes that he has this skill set to take advantage of people.''
