Based on George R. Stewart’s eponymous novel, Earth Abides tells the story of the few lone survivors of a pandemic who endeavor to form a new civilization after the rest of humanity has been wiped out.
At the center of the narrative is Ish, a geologist who ventures out of his home to find the rest of the survivors despite the risk of getting infected during the pandemic. The MGM+ sci-fi series has so far aired three episodes, featuring several time jumps.
Ish’s community has grown over time, bringing its own challenges and benefits. The previous episode concluded with a cliffhanger that left Ish’s fate hanging in the balance. Earth Abides Season 1 Episode 4, which will be released on December 22, 2024, at 9.00 pm ET, will reveal his fate.
The release date and time of Earth Abides Season 1 Episode 4
The fourth episode of Earth Abides will be aired on MGM+ on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 9.00 pm ET/PT. Notably, the show has a two-part event on that day and will release Episode 5 right after Episode 4 at 10.00 pm ET/PT.
The first season of the post-apocalyptic drama features only six episodes, which means only one more episode will be left for broadcast following this week’s two-part event. The fourth and fifth episodes are titled Predators and The Return, respectively.
What to expect from Earth Abides Season 1 Episode 4?
In the previous episode, Ish was attacked by a mountain lion, who left him injured and unconscious. The animal seemingly dragged the geologist into the woods while Evie tried to get help.
Considering Ish is the protagonist of Earth Abides, he will survive the attack but suffer some severe injuries. Meanwhile, San Lupo is set to face some harsh weather conditions, and the community will encounter a group of nomadic people.
As the nomadic group will claim that they know where to find water, Ish will reluctantly accept their help while still having trust issues. MGM+ has released an official logline for Predators, which reads:
"A drought hits San Lupo; a nomadic group arrives that knows how to find water and wants to trade; Ish has his doubts, but chooses to accept help."
What happened in Earth Abides Season 1 Episode 3?
The third episode, “World Without End,” began with Ish accidentally hitting a baby mountain lion with his car. As he got out to check what happened, he saw a young girl, Evie, hiding in the woods. Evie did not trust him at first and kept her distance.
Ish offered her food and a safe place to stay, and after some hesitation, she agreed to go with him. Back at Ish and Emma’s home, their community had already grown. Jorge and Maurine had joined them, along with Ish and Emma’s two children.
Soon, four new survivors also showed up at their home, including a man, two women, and a child. Although Emma welcomed them with open arms, Ish was suspicious about them. He worried that one of the new women, Jean, could create problems for the group as she might have been a drug addict.
At the same time, he missed the peacefulness of being alone, while Emma believed that building a bigger community was essential for their survival. Maurine then found a letter from Evie’s bag, written by the girl’s mother.
The letter explained that Evie had been abused by her father after the pandemic, which caused her to stop speaking. Maurine and Jorge later had a baby, bringing some joy to the group; however, tragedy once again stuck them as Ish’s dog, Lucky, was killed during a storm.

Ish was heartbroken as Lucky was his first companion after the world fell apart. The episode ended with a mountain lion attacking Ish while he was with Evie and his son. He told them to run as he fought the lion, but it overpowered him and nearly killed him.
