Earth Abides is a post-apocalyptic science fiction story about the fall of a civilization and the emergence of a new one. It follows Ish, a solitary young geologist, who wakes up after a coma and travels to the neighboring town to discover a mysterious illness has destroyed the world. He leads the creation of a new civilisation.
Episode 3 of Earth Abides brings new challenges and setbacks for the protagonist, adding new characters to the series that has already introduced Ish and Emma. The episode has a tragic end that should heighten audience curiosity about the next episode. Here is a complete recap.

What happens in Season 1 Episode 3 of Earth Abides
The episode opens with Ish stopping his car after something hits the vehicle. It is mountain lion cub. As he sets the dead cub's body aside, he notices someone in the woods. It's a young survivor, Evie. He chases her and, on catching up, convinces her to come home with him.
At the house, we find Emma, Ish, and their kid already living with another couple, Jorge and Maurine. On checking Evie's bag when she is bathing, Maurine finds a letter from the young woman's mother. She finds out Evie was abused by her father for long, as a result of which she has stopped speaking.
Earth Abides also shows how Ish misses solitary life. After a seven-year time jump, some more survivors end up joining them — two women, a man, and a child. Emma discovers the man is a doctor and is happy because he can help the community. However one of the women has a history of drug abuse, which is a matter of concern for her.
Ish's pet dog Lucky is his first friend. However, when a storm hits the region, Ish is saddened to find Lucky crushed under a tree.
The episode ends on a note of high tension when a mountain lion is spotted lingering around Evie and Ish's kid. Ish tries to distract the lion but is attacked by the beast. Later, we see the lion dragging an unconscious Ish toward the woods.

At the start of Earth Abides Episode 2, Ish meets Emma, another survivor who gives a new ray of hope. They eventually shed skepticism and decide to live together. They face several challenges. Emma knows a lot about hunting while Ish learns to live in such a world.

They two are romantically attracted and grow more dependent on each other. This marks the beginning of a new phase of life for them post-apocalypse. Emma comes up with the idea of finding out more survivors and build a community. She puts up a huge board in front of their house, welcoming survivors. Emma and Ish are finally blessed with a child.
At the end of the episode in Earth Abides, we see a couple of strange figures looking at Emma's board.
